Background: Black girl of 2 American black parents who are both English teachers was born and raised in Japan. By every metric she's Japanese other than her appearance. She speaks Japanese, behaves as Japanese do in mannerism, personality, etc. , understands and lives in the culture Japanese do.

THEN SHE meets Americans who introduce her to new ideas.

Watch the first 2:30. I thought it was interesting perspective.

TL;DW cliffs: black Americans gave her the first dose of discrimination she'd ever received by telling her she was "black, but not really black" because she didn't embrace shitty ghetto culture.

Japan protects their self interest and culture.

So by your standards, of course they’re racist.

You see this a lot in native cultures. Native girls that are successful and educated are accused of being white. They’re called pineapples.

I like the part where she mentioned that she got stares on the train due to the fact that she was different looking and she stands out. A lot of Asian people in Asia have never seen a black person before so they get curious hence the stares. The stares was because of that and not discrimination. But if that happened in the US, it’s automatically translated as racism or some form of prejudice.

That's the problem with a lot of black people in America today. They think if you don't act ghetto, then you're not really black. Then, they'll call you an uncle Tom and stuff like that. Then, the ones who act ghetto wonder why they can't get better jobs and they think it's because the evil white people are trying to hold them down, when in reality that's complete bullshite.

It really is a shame.

My favorite part was "that (slavery) happened over 100 years ago... Why should that matter?"

Beautiful insight and reasoning from an intelligent person. I like her a lot. We need way more like her

China is way worse.

I was in Beijing and they were running up to black people and taking their picture while laughing and uninvitedly touching their hair. Same with redheads.

Like 80% of the Chinese population is uneducated, communist sheltered, retards

If she stayed in America long enough she would have been told she's mentally ill to even question the idea that slavery is super relevant and the foremost issue when speaking of American social ills.

China was the most advanced society at one point in world history, even beyond that of western Europe.

The interesting part of her interview, and was brought up in the comments as well, is that to the Japanese there is only the Japanese people, and foreigners (gaijin). There is no "white gaijin", "black gaijin", "latinx or whatever gaijin".....you're simply gaijin.

There is only the Japanese people, and everyone else. Whereas in this country we become more and more fractured every year. There is no such thing as an "american" identity anymore. Those days are long, long gone. There is only your race, gender identity, ethnicity, etc.

And if you don't recognize it in others, you are immediately a racist or bigot.

This country has become a fricking joke, and everyone else across the world is laughing at what we've become.
