Question about pipe freeze prevention. Is cutting off the main line and emptying the pipes a better alternative to letting the faucets drip?

Be sure to turn off your water heater before you drain your pipes or you will burn out all your elements

I would only turn it completely off if I'm leaving the house for an extended period of time. If you do turn it off, remember to open all your faucets to completely drain it out and turn off power/gas line to your water heater completely.

Special Weather Statement
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
524 AM CST Sat Dec 30 2017
...A VERY COLD AIRMASS ON TRACK TO IMPACT THE AREA STARTING ON NEW
YEARS EVE AND CONTINUING THROUGH MUCH OF THE FIRST WEEK OF 2018...
A much colder airmass will move into southern Mississippi and
southeast Louisiana, beginning on New Years Eve, with a prolonged
period of much below normal temperatures expected to remain in
place through at least Friday of next week.
Temperatures late Sunday night will fall into the lower and middle
20s for southwest Mississippi and adjacent portions of southeast
Louisiana Parishes. A Hard Freeze Watch is in effect for this area
for Sunday night. This watch will likely be upgraded to a warning
by tomorrow morning. Watches and Warnings for the remainder of the
area are likely to be issued later this afternoon or on Sunday.
Overnight low temperatures will be especially cold with much of
the area with the possible exception of far lower Plaquemines
Parish seeing lows in the lower to middle 20s or colder Monday
night into Tuesday morning and likely for several nights
afterward. The coldest weather will be over southwest Mississippi
and the adjacent parishes in southeast Louisiana, where lows may
fall into the middle and upper teens on multiple nights. Low
temperatures Wednesday and Thursday nights will not be quite as
cold, but most areas will still be well below freezing. Daytime
high temperatures will be roughly 20 degrees below normal, and
have trouble getting past 40 degrees New Years Day and Tuesday.
Highs will only be slightly warmer Wednesday and Thursday. Wind
chill values in the teens and 20s are likely New Years Day
and Tuesday, possibly in the single digits in some areas.
As the cold air arrives Sunday, precipitation will be departing
the area. While a wintry mix of precipitation is not forecast for
Sunday night, we cannot completely rule out the possibility.
Freeze and Hard Freeze Warnings, as well as Wind Chill Advisories
will likely be required for much of the region into the middle of
next week. Preparations for the cold weather should be completed
today into Sunday morning. Those taking part in outdoor activities
for the New Years holiday should dress appropriately for the cold
weather.
We will continue to monitor this developing weather situation,
and provide updates as necessary.

Forecast for Birmingham on Monday is 27/13.
At first I didn't think that sounded that bad, but the wind should be a consistent 20 mph all day. That's going to suuuuuck.

So letting faucets drip Should be good enough? Do I let all faucets drip?
Posted on 12/30/17 at 8:23 am to PeteRose
Let them all drip. What’s it gonna cost, 50 cents ?
Posted on 12/30/17 at 8:27 am to lsufan112001
I wasn’t concern with the cost. Just wanted to cover all basis. I guess this includes all outside water faucets too. I live on a raised foundation. Really nervous about this freeze.

Stuck in Starkville for a wedding and wake up to winter storm warnings.
I do not want to be here longer than necessary.

Canadian bringing that there vort max uncomfortable close to snowy position. Windbarbs straight west instead of a little southwest.
This is to remind there's still a far flung potential for some snow that would really be a pain in the arse here. Don't expect it, I'm not, but awareness by weather baws.

Euro and CMC showing snow close to the south coast of La.
It's not impossible that a slight change in the trof could bring some snow north

Not impossible and it doesn't take much moisture to squeeze out a little snow in these conditions. NAM will be in focus soon for that timeframe. It's been pretty solid this winter in that 3-5 day range.
This is one of the best rare occasions I don't want snow here. It's too cold and it'll make for far too many travel issues and difficulties for the poor folks in the region.

You'd be one of the few pulling against it, lol

I know, and I'm all in for snow the vast majority of cases down here, because most of the time it'll clear out and melt quick enough to not be amajor wrench in the system. Snow here...well would be.
