Nah, I mis-understood. I thought the $125k was household income. If it's $250k then that makes more sense.

eta: I paid all my student debt off but mainly because I'm old and did the payment plan for like 15 years.

You have to give people reasons to get out and go vote. So everyone who is strapped with student loans and earn less than $125k will make sure to go out to vote for democrats because they know the possibility of this isn't likely of the Republican candidate.

Just like Republicans use the whole 2nd amendment thing by scaring people into thinking the democrats are coming for their guns. Or the whole abortion thing.

They know how simple people are so they take these little issues to get people worked up and get people out to vote. Its all a game.

This one is easy.

Government backed student loans are given out to anyone that can breathe. These loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy, meaning they'll get paid back no matter what. Colleges then realized that they will get paid no matter how high they jack up tuition costs. They started creating a bunch of useless majors to open up more enrollment, all while continuing to raise tuition costs, partially to grossly overpay a bloated administrative staff. The last piece of this is high school guidance counselors started heavily pushing college as the only path to success in life. Not coincidentally, I believe high schools are given government grants per graduate that gets admitted to college.

TL;DR- When the government got involved, tuition and enrollment skyrocketed.
