Bicycles

What is a good brand of bicycle for commuting? There are a lot of brands out there. My local bike store focuses on Trek bikes. Thoughts?

This is not the board to discuss a quality bike.
For some reason bikes are liked on this board as much as a BLMer likes a policeman.
Probably cause most here are fat and can't ride a bike

Trek, cannondale, specialized all make decent bikes. Trek makes some lower end junk, too, I think.

Treks are great bikes. For commuting you probably want a hybrid or “city bike”.

bicycle for commuting
Trek is good stuff- I have ridden a Trek road bike (up to 50 miles at a lick) for the last 10 years.
It’s dated now- but it still gets the job done and everything has held up well.
Bikes tend to get these boutique followings- Trek isn’t as shiny as it once was before Lance Armstrong had his fall from grace. But it is a good American company if you like mom and apple pie stuff.

Thoughts?
Wait another month or two for the thousands of barely used bikes sold during the early corona days to hit Craigslist and get a good one at a steep discount.

There are some sweet super hero themed bikes at Walmart right now.
Get an avengers one

Right now? The one you can buy. Covid has wiped bike stock out from $100 Walmart bikes to $15,000 hyper-bikes.
Honestly for a commuter (still need to narrow down more specifics) I would suggest BikesDirect. Even their lower end bikes use solid name brand components. Thats not useful now since they basically have no bikes for sale unless you are super tall or super short then they may have one or two in stock.
For a lower end bike the key is the quality of the components.

Love my Trek. Great bikes. You get what you pay for, so if it's something you want to stick with, I'd pay a little more. My bike is a carbon frame, so it's a little more expensive ($600), but you can certainly get a good $4-500 model Trek
I worked with a guy that had an $8,000 bike.

What carbon frame Trek only cost $600? I think their cheapest carbon frame road bike is over $2,000.

Yeah Sorry dude trek doesn’t have a $400 bike and surely no such thing as a $600 carbon bike

I can't remember the model, but it's a hybrid bike. I've had it for 4 years. Thing only weighs 13 pounds or so. But from what I remember it was somewhere between $600-800

Yeah, no. I have road bikes that cost from 5 to 12 times that and none of them are under 14 pounds. Getting under 15 is not too hard but under 14 is starting to really pump the price up.
I am what's known as a weight weenie I can tell you to the gram what every individual component on every bike I have weighs and you simply can't build a hybrid near that weight unless you used some really exotic parts. I will go out on a limb and say Trek has never made a carbon frame bike that sold for $600 or even $800.
ETA Trek's current cheapest carbon frame hybrid ($1700)is the FX Sport Carbon 4 and it weighs 21.06 pounds in size medium. The lightest hybrid they currently sell is the FX Sport 6 and weighs 20.5 pounds in medium and costs $2100.
