Quote from my buddy who is in the insurance business.
No convertibles.
4 door is better than 2.
No V-8 or turbos / sports edition / GT.
No standard trans.
Not red. (He said he was serious)
No Jeep.
Nothing exotic. Doesn't sound like you are shopping BMW's or Porsches.
How on earth does a manual transmission make insurance go higher? That's possibly one of the most absurd things I've ever heard. Automatic makes it a lot easier to do things other than drive.
Then again, the insurance industry is pretty absurd in general.

Maybe some insurance folks can weigh in because I’m in the same boat and am concerned.
My frievd is doing this with his extra car and teenage daughter. And the car is a muscle car. He’s just not listing her as an insured driver. But he thinks if she wrecks, they will cover it b/c the car is insured. I wasn’t taking that chance with mine and I’m paying out the arse, while he pays hardly anything.

get a station wagon or a minivan

I was in that boat 3 years ago. My 16 year old son wanted a Jeep but I budgeted $15K for his first car and didn’t feel like I could get a reliable Jeep for that price as I can’t even do basic maintenance. So I went with a 2010 FJ Cruiser with just under 100K miles.
My insurance went up about $1200 every 6 months with State Farm after multi line, good student, safe driver discounts.

Expedition, Yukon or something similar. it’s a gas monster so hopefully will not drive far but she will survive her first wreck

My daughters got a G wagon when they turned 16 and started driving. It’s a very safe vehicle. They like the style of it and so far it’s holding value fairly well.
I also looked at the Porsche Macan for them but they said they would literally die of embarrassment driving one.

My dad always told me no red too. I guess it's true.
It's not.. this is the biggest myth still perpetrated in the insurance business for some stupid arse reason..
The color of the vehicle and the type of transmission it has means absolutely nothing from and underwriting stand point..

I now a LOT of people who keep their vehicles registered with their secondary Mississippi and Alabama addresses instead of Louisiana for insurance.

I think the last running K cars got bought up in cash for clunkers. Just like you don't see box B cars or box explorers. Cash for clunkers took out all the cheap 80s and 90s stock.

motorcycle insurance would be really cheap.

Girls are easier with this. You can get a cute crossover type vehicle or something similar. Mine is 16 and he wants a truck. I tried to get him in a Jeep. It no dice. His buddy has one and he hates it. I’m thinking 4wd because if he’s horsing around I want him doing it in the mud and not on the streets.
