Having been a product of the magnet system I can tell you this is definitely present in most aspects of the education requirements there.
BESE was forced to remove common core.
But, yes, magnet school are very much better than the non-magnet schools

Regardless, the private schooling options in the NOLA area do not vastly outperform the magnet schools of the area. Much of the draw to the schools are legacies and the idea of public schooling being the devil. Personally I do not believe the price of the education is not worth it given the magnet options available. To each their own though.

Yeah . You'd hate my kids for sure . Buddhism and weekly meditation , bi- racial , son has long hair, playing paying music gigs at venues like Cypress Moon at 16 ,encouraged to be respectfully subversive independent thinkers.
Can't say they are SJW or liberal though, as we read the Conservative classics here, maybe a better descriptive would be " Socratic method kids" or kids who have been taught they have to prove their assertions with fact ( you might want to ponder that). I'll check for tats, piercings and sexual identity issues in the morning though- thanks for the tip.if they demonstrate any of that bullshite I'll get their liberally- indoctrinated asses over to Live Oak or Dutch-town on the quick for some Rules of Proper Living immersion.

, each and every one of those kids turned extremely liberal, with various body and facial piercings, goth, hippie, gender issues, etc... you name a SJW or liberal belief or stereotypical appearance and each one now possesses one or more.
That is just ridiculous. None of our kids came out of BRMHS with colored hair, unusual piercings, tatoos, etc., and neither did the kids of friends. Do they teach broader thought than your average private school, sure, but for us that was the education we wanted and it has served them well.

I can't speak for NOLA but the vast majority of kids won't be accepted into magnet programs and that really hasn't been discussed much in this thread. If you can get them in great, if not you have to consider other options. There are plenty of 3.0 GPA students that go on to be very successful in life.

How are you drawing this conclusion?

I'll put Chalmette up against any school in Slidell... Or St. Charles Parish in all aspects

This is true, however speaking from previous personal experience the requirements arent exactly the most challenging or demanding. Also once you're in theres a pretty sub-par standard minimum GPA wise 2.5 or so as of my graduation. Including myself in this there are tons of very bright kids there but equally as many normal kids who just genuinely put in the effort. Would imagine its the same at any higher performing school.
Also there should be more options than just either magnet or private. Regardless of income or smarts a kid should have some decent schooling. I agree

The problem is, in most of urban Louisiana, there simply isn't.

Being a very recent graduate and knowing many peers who have attended a few different places of education they would tell you much of the same. Also have heard places like Jesuit and Holy Cross are very test prep oriented while Rummel and JC are more shitshows academically. There are great schools like Brother Martin though, but again knowing many who have attended both I can tell you they arent any more smart or capable, maybe more financially stable but that may be it.

This is true but when poor education funding and standards are put in place these two education options get the most attention unfortunately. Jefferson Parish per capita has one of the highest rates of private education, very disappointing to be honest.

What about the kids who had a pretty good GPA, 3.0 or higher but could not test into a magnet school?
BTW congrats on doing well in High School. I wish you the best of luck in college and your future.

yeah, it seems like some people act as if uhigh, ben franklin, and brmhs are accessible to average people in these public school threads.

Oh no I get that not everyone is lucky enough to do so, but magnet education is much more doable for a wider range of people from different economic backgrounds while private education just isnt. Personally if it were up to me public and magnet education and its improvement should be a massive subject of improvement regarding louisiana. I know there is discussion surrounding it but just "send the kids to private school" isnt acceptable answer.

Yeah, now I see exactly why he goes to BRHS. You son fits the stereotype pretty well. That's not a bad thing. I'm sure he is a great kid and BRHS offer great things for kids like him. However, that isn't your average high school kid.

It isn't a funding problem, it starts at home in urban environments. You can't throw money at the problem.

yep, because most of the other schools are not great and it's much more beneficial to invest your child's education in something else.

Single parent homes and thug culture is 99.999% of the problem

You know, I think most parents would love to send their kids to public school as we are paying for it regardless. Not everyone tests into magnet school so what do you do? Send them to East Jefferson? I wish LA had a great public school system but we don't. My child has a 3.8 but does not do great in standardized testing due to ADHD. Send her to EJ? I think not
