There is some potential for a much better property. The Belle riverboat is small, congested, and trashy. A Casino in the Atrium near the restaurants they are planning to open would probably attract a better audience.

While the Belle is moving onto land, CQ Holding would start to renovate the casino’s hotel, which has been closed since 2020. Plans are to initially renovate about 160 rooms in the 288-room hotel.

Reopening the hotel “feels like a no-brainer,” Downey said.

Moving the Belle onto land and renovating the hotel might cost “a touch more” than the original plans for moving the current operations of Hollywood Casino Baton Rouge onto land, he said. When that project was announced in August 2020, the costs were pegged at $21 million to $25 million.

The Belle will remain open while the casino moves onto land.

“Everything old will become new,” Downey said. “We’re going through the branding process.”

CQ bought the Belle from Caesars Entertainment in a deal that was finalized Thursday. The Illinois-based company already owns Hollywood Casino after it bought the property in December for $28.2 million.

The Casino will be moving into the atrium, which they already own:

Overdue. Ventilation on a boat fricking sucks. Sports betting has created competition for L'auberge. That's Barstool vs Draftkings.

Hopefully it results in them bringing in better entertainment.

They could probably attract more people to an empty field.

My guess is that the Belle will just take market share from Hollywood. And it will probably draw in some people with a decent sports bar and restaurant in the Atrium thing.

Is there an arena in there for events?

There's plenty of space for shootings or gang-related violence.

Probably better for the people who can't swim.

It was a pretty sweet set up in the early 90s. There was a really cool bar in the atrium. Good looking college chicks hung out there. Went to many LSU recruiting bashes.

Now....wouldn't be caught dead. Why does everything nice turn to crap in BR?

The problem is that the downtown casinos attract a trashier crowd since L'Auberge opened and I'm not sure how they reverse that image.

The last time I went to the Belle, which was about 10 years ago, I didn't even make it through the door before turning around and hauling arse to anywhere but there. Their patrons are sketchy, to say the least.

It’s downtown BR. You’re always gonna have that element that keeps the people you desire away. Or runs them off. Good luck with the reno, but it’s still gonna be trashy and sad in short order.

The answer is part of the question.

I think that was becoming a liability. Well, I know when the boats in BR used to actually leave the dock, on a few occasions someone jumped off and drowned.

One time some guy didn't realize it was leaving and it had just taken off, he jumped thinking he could make it and.. well.. its the Mississippi river. He drowned. I know thats the reason the boats stayed docked. But I am sure there are other liabilities that come with a riverboat casino even if it doesn't go anywhere.

Oh it could be a great place for many things. Instead it is used for a low rent casino. Go figure.
