Amid two years of surging bloodshed, Baton Rouge poured resources into grassroots efforts that sought to mediate conflicts before they explode into violence — initiatives that local officials strongly credit for a 23% dip in homicides last year.

Now the focus has turned to reducing the death rate even more.

Entrenched poverty and disinvestment will pose huge obstacles to that goal, officials say, as they caution that substantial reduction in the killing will likely happen over years, not months. Yet there are signs that Baton Rouge is turning a corner.

As recognition of the recent progress, a national anti-violence coalition enlisted the city-parish in an effort to reduce killings in four major American cities by 20% over the next five years — an attainable goal, local leaders say, considering the emergence of a new grassroots infrastructure that drove the past 12 months' improvements.

"While we are happy to see a decrease in the number of homicides, let me be very clear: We are by no means counting this as a home-run victory, but more so as a successful plan," Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said at an event Thursday announcing the partnership.

The article doesn't credit this, but I suspect that part of the drop is because everyone that was going to get murdered, commit murder, or would consider committing murder is already in jail from murder or has been murdered themselves.

Also remember that Broom's office accidentally sent the list of BRAVE CI's to the local media shortly after she was inaugurated. That tends to sour the relationship between the community and police.

It's funny how SWB loves to celebrate the reduction in crime....Homicides are up 63% since she took office.

Data from the coroners office:

2020 Homicides - 136
2019 Homicides - 97
2018 Homicides - 105
2017 Homicides - 124 (Broome takes office)
2016 Homicides - 83
2015 Homicides - 95
2014 Homicides - 73
2013 Homicides - 79
2012 Homicides - 96
2011 Homicides - 90
2010 Homicides - 89
2009 Homicides - 95
2008 Homicides - 93

Eventually someone will get picked up that will have a gun that matches.

But with BRPD's leadership and record of incompetence at the top....I'm not sure they'd actually check for this anymore.

the city-parish breaking its annual homicide record in 2020 with at least 114 killings that year; it shattered the record again in 2021 with a staggering 149 slayings. That figure dropped in 2022 to 116, the newspaper's records show

Last year was still the second highest all time

Are those East Baton Rouge Parish or Baton Rouge only?

I know it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but if it's East Baton Rouge - it's out of a pool that's twice the population, which might make it seem less acute of a problem.

IMO it's still a big problem. Broom is incompetent and needs to lose the next election, but it's a theme among a lot of American cities right now: Crime is up, enforcement is down.

Those numbers seem staggeringly low.

It's hard to believe there is only one murder every 3 days or so in BR.

Well there's usually 2-3 Breauxsif threads about murders for every actual murder.

OR maybe the hospitals in the area have had so much practice dealing with gunshot wounds they are turning what used to be murders to shootings.

i love how the broome list "non-fatal shootings". They're only non-fatal because of the shooters' aim.
