100% true.

That being said, there is a big effort (independent of the incompetent mayor's office) to fix up some of this area. A lot of them from local business owners and residents with skin in the game.

There are a lot of historic properties on that stretch that haven't collapsed in on themselves yet. Honestly when it's as bad as it currently is, it would be hard to not improve things with just a little effort.

If the locals are involved, it might work. If they get losers like Gravy Chambers involved... it's going to fail miserably.

It might put a large dent into fixing up the area IF the usual politicians and local grifters weren't the ones handling the money. I doubt the amount of actual work even equals $1,000,000. That money will be siphoned off in kickbacks, etc.....rinse and repeat

Once minority businesses start up (jury still out), will they be subject to all of the taxes that other businesses pay (and thereby become republicans)?

Or will the government build in enough exceptions, exemptions, credits, and incentives so that minority businessmen still promote liberal democrat policies that kill existing businesses that aren't on the government dole?

Only way to improve NBR is to change the people living there by buying up residential properties and flipping them to higher value homeowners.

All the $ in the world can build properties, but it isn't going to change their behaviors.

That $3m could do Plank a lot of good.

Did I say $3m? I meant $1m.

$50K buys a lot of groceries for Gravy.

That area has a Cane's, Raoul's, an amazing seafood market, Krispy Kreme, a postal office, and an urgent care center. It's an ideal place to start. It's also about a quarter mile from a massive BRPD complex.

The only reason that area is decent is bc of the business XOM BR brings to it. There’s a ton of money to be made bc XOM employees and contractors go eat at Tony’s and anything around it. It’s not the residents of the area though. It’s a free market reaction to demand. XOM employees need a place to eat, there’s a ton of them, and they can’t go far. One place thrives bc of that, and other places see that value and try to capitalize off of it. This govt plan is the exact opposite, they’re trying to incentivize businesses to come to a place where there is no free market demand for those businesses. You can’t create demand like that

The point people are making is that you can fix up the area all you want, but if the residents don’t take care of it and lower the crime rate, it won’t matter.

The money would be better off spent on mentorship programs, financial education, college/trade school scholarships, etc.

Then SWB should cut them a deal saying “no backsies” to leave.

So they are awarding $500 million to 7 cities with Baton Rouge being 1 of the 7. Am I right in thinking that the other $495 million will be split amongst the remaining 6 cities?

I am obviously missing something but I don't see it

$500 million over 5 years. Say it is $100 million per year. Baton Rouge gets $5 million this year so the other 6 cities split up $95 million.

That is almost $16 million average per the 6. They must have worse blight than NBR.

$5million won’t do anything. You can’t build a grocery store for $5 million, especially after SWBs cronies get their cuts.

You can build a grocery store for that.

It will be the shittiest looking $5m ever billed and will have no stock on the shelves.

5 mil won't go as far as you think for the square miles that need to be pushed into pile and burned.

According to Build Baton Rouge, 37% of the Plank Road Corridor's households are living below the poverty line.

That's actually a good bit lower than I thought I'd have said 75%.

I drove Plank Road yesterday. If the community gets behind this in a positive way it could have a net positive effect. But for a corridor that long, $5 million seems like a small amount to work with.
