Midland airport runs flights in and out all day everyday.

I would absolutely go without getting paid and without any other compensation before I would lay anyone off. About ten years ago we went 18 months without a job and I kept everyone on and dipped into savings to keep the company afloat. in almost 20 years we’ve never missed even a single hour of anyone’s pay no matter what. In exchange for that I expect absolute loyalty and 100% commitment to the company...no matter what

Capitalism is responsible for the largest middle class in history. The richest in poverty class in history. The smallest % of people in poverty in history. The largest wealth generation in history.
Capitalism is the only system where all the poor people are fat. Obviously a net-negative, but also says a lot about how plentiful the West has it compared to the rest of the world. Even Mexico is fat now

Probably blacked out drunk. I survived layoffs last March and I will tell you I only remember about 20 minutes after the "you survived" meeting from that day

Good for you. Not to discourage you, but I remember working for a company and was told there were going to be 3 rounds of layoffs. The first round took place the week of Christmas that year, then late January then again Late February.
I didn't have much work at all so I thought there was a good chance I would get laid off in first round. Nope. Second round came along and I was still there. I went ask my manager (I was in a position where I was working on a number of projects so my manager was my manager bc I technically fell under him, but didn't do work under him).
Him and I didn't see eye to eye, but when I went ask him he told me I was good. They were going to move me in a corporate position keeping track of certain things on all projects and that as long as there was work I would have a job.
Well that was pretty exciting.. Then after two week I still had no work, was scratching at whatever to find work to have projects to charge to. Then a week after that, dude called me in his office, I saw HR sitting down. Dude started to give me the whole "It was a pleasure having you work here and you were an asset..." I just looked at him and asked "I am laid all right?" he shook his head yes, I reached for my papers and left out.
The best advice I ever got and it was on my first job. Don't ever be loyal to your employer. frick them. They are going to do what's in their best interest, you do what is in yours.
Man, I remember my dad retired from Albermarle in the late 90s. They were loyal to their workers and retired workers. He got sick towards the end and they took care of him. I remember my mom having a conversation with another lady whose husband worked for another company and they both talked about how good the company their husband's worked for was. People had pride in their job.
Today. Companies don't give a frick about you and knowing that its hard to take pride in your job and you sure as hell don't put them above anything else in your life.

I’ve been the guy who walked into a place and when he walked out there were 500 less people there.
As a result, I knew when the axe was probably going to head my way (the signs are there folks if you look) I got my real estate license and was already working it (before the axe fell) and used my severance to float me till I made enough to get my business on its feet. If you go that route you’re going to need a minimum of 6 month’s income to weather the highs and lows.
Plan ahead if you can, and when your company stops hiring it’s time to make sure the plan is ready to go.

My company had that back in June and it was terrifying. I survived thankfully but getting in in the morning to have an email saying I was NOT part of the day’s layoffs and saying goodbye to 30% of my coworkers was a bit rattling. It’s happened twice since then too. I’ve managed to be on the hood side each time but it’s definitely stress-inducing. At some point my number will be called.
Who do ya work for? What do they do?

Willing to bet Abita does advisory work for KPMG. They held an all hands on deck call today and laid off 5% the exact way OP describe.
