It's right out of the Cold War playbook. Communist aggression can only be checked when you convince them not to dare cross certain lines of demarcation.

In Southeast Asia, the issue may be less commie/anti-commie philosophical views and more about maintaining the sovereignty of existing nations from imperialist expansion.

Take for example, Vietnam. A Marxist-Leninist state, but they are staunchly against further Chinese expansion and have become an economic partner for the United States.

All that to say, we may have to think in terms of an Pacific Defense Alliance that incorporates Vietnam as a US partner.

Odds on how long it takes for the PLA/CPP to get plans and specs for our sub designs from the Aussies?

..if they don't already have them.

It could be argued that having such a “strong” military in this day and age is more to control a countries own people rather than fight a hot war with another power that would be the proverbial “bringing a knife to a gun fight”

Those boats out of Pearl burn a lot of EFPH making holes in the water in the SCS. Source: my time stationed on a sub out of Pearl standing watch on the reactor.

It’s a lot shorter run for a boat out of Australia to patrol those waters.

I’m all for it. Hell, I’ll sign up again to run their nuke power training pipeline

Bet they're going to launch tomahawks missiles from them to hit Australian domestic terrorists who want to actually be able to leave their house.

ETA: Maybe we should give Japan & Korea some too.

Given the absolute fact that no nuclear powers will ever fight a hot war, what is the point of having thousands of tanks/fighter jets/ guys with M-16’s etc?

And there especially is no need to have thousands of tanks/guys with M-16’s, etc. What purpose does that serve in a nuclear age?

Go tell that to the indians, japanese and Taiwanese

Protect them how? Is China going to invade Australia? What people fail to understand is that we are actively at war with China, it’s just that it’s a cyber/information war, rather than a hot one.

i will never understand why we sell our military tech to anyone. We developed it, we should keep it. Our allies today may be our enemies in 50 years. Its dumb and shortsighted.

Will/could there even be a hot war between nuclear powers? If not, who cares? The only thing it’s good for is bullying non nuclear powers.

I can’t tell if you’re ignorant, naive, or both. The entire reason NATO came in to being was to stop a Soviet dash through the Fulda Gap supported by tac nukes, thereby avoiding the use of ICBMs and total nuclear war yet still seizing Western Germany and forcing the allies to the negotiating table.

You really don’t understand the concept of MAD do you? Here’s a tip: it doesn’t eliminate the value of non-total nuclear hot wars.

We only sell certain tech to certain countries. Sure, we may sell F35s to allied nations, but they aren't getting our top-tier flight control systems, weapon systems, etc.

Most, if not all, or our bleeding-edge tech is export controlled....as in defense contractors aren't allowed to sell it to other countries, even allies.

Now of course that doesn't stop certain administrations from looking the other way while Chinese spies send the good stuff back to China. Not to name any names.

Surprised we don't just give them to Australia....that seems like what we do now. We just give billions of dollars worth of military supplies away.

France is pretty peeved about this. Australia was supposed to buy $40 Billion worth of subs from them. Not so fast.

The point is to counter balance China's bullying in the SCS.

There's an easier and safer way of doing this. Build American subs and let American's operate them.

And not be bought and paid for by China

But no one ever accused a Dim of being smart, just a sucker to be bought out

How do you use submarines to control a population?
