Australia just agreed to a new defense pact with the US and to buy some subs from us.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia has canceled a contract with France for conventional submarines and instead will build nuclear-powered submarines using U.S. technology because of changing strategic conditions in the region, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Thursday. President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday a new U.S. security alliance with Australia and Britain that will help equip Australia with a nuclear submarine fleet. The agreement would make Australia the first country without nuclear weapons to obtain nuclear-powered submarines. Morrison said U.S. nuclear submarine technology wasn’t available to Australia in 2016 when it entered a 56 billion Australian dollar ($43 billion) deal with France to build 12 of the world’s largest conventional diesel-electric submarines. The United States has previously only shared the technology with Britain.

Probably to sink any vessel full of Australian citizens trying to escape the government mandated gulags.

What is the point of having a “strong” military in a nuclear age? No major works powers will ever fight a hot war again. So besides bullying smaller/less developed countries, what is the point?

The point is to counter balance China's bullying in the SCS.
Giving the Aussies nuke boats means they don't have to rely on refueling allowing them to stay on station longer.
The longest my sub went out to sea without porting was about 140ish days. We received food replenishment at sea after 86 even though we still had ample food stores onboard.

Deterrence against China.

No, and no one else is either. That’s why there will never be a hot war between nuclear powers.
Disagree. I can see a situation where Pakistan goes to war with India.
Or India going to war with China over their repeated incursions along the border.
Western Powers vs Russia probably will never play out but the Indian-Pacific Rim is this century's Sarajevo

The only thing we can’t sell the Aussies are actual nukes. That would trigger an Australian Missile Crisis.
But, if we give them the tools to help them control their trade routes and to dissuade the Chinese from any potential invasions, it could help convince Beijing from doing anything on their own part that would make the US come in and intervene.

Makes sense on some level. But there will never be a hot war between any countries with nuclear capabilities. Never has been and never will, it basically can’t happen, and everyone knows it. So besides just postering and being able to bully less developed countries, what is the point?

I’m all in for being on the team that has to move to Australia for 5-10 years to train them….assuming they ever escape this zero-Covid shiite.

“Posturing” is how we signal our intention to use nukes if need be.

But need will never be.

And there especially is no need to have thousands of tanks/guys with M-16’s, etc. What purpose does that serve in a nuclear age?

Can you be sure that this would never happen?
What about a decapitation strike with stealth technology?

It's right out of the Cold War playbook. Communist aggression can only be checked when you convince them not to dare cross certain lines of demarcation.
What I'm worried about is China's current philosophy of their national and racial superiority. One can argue WWI and WWII was fueled by those same sentiments
