At the time of the American Civil War, is there a country that could have invaded us?

North and South aren’t split and all under 1 force. Who would have commanded the military? Was there a country back then capable of putting up a fight against us on American soil? Let’s put year at 1861, war is about to start and another country comes in to invade, north and south combine forces to repel.

No one could have brought enough forces. Troop mobilization wasn’t exactly as easy as it is now.

It is highly unlikely the lower 48 will ever be invaded, it is a big reason we don't need to have our military all around the world... we could greatly reduce our spending and secure the US easily. Stay #1 with technology but don't put Americans at risk guarding other countries and don't spend the money guarding other countries.

No. The US has major geographical advantages with a major sea on both sides and 2 mountain ranges.

Just too much land to cover with technology of the time.

England via Canada. Mexico could have tried to take back California with all the forces focused on the east

Canada or Mexico would be your only real options.

Didn’t Mexico still hate us? I figured Mexico would allow another country to mobilize there and attack us

And they would have marched all the way north to take over DC?

Absolutely no chance. That's even worse than the US-Afghanistan odds. Guerrilla warfare over the vastness of the US would have been a nightmare for even the most powerful countries.

I agree, I just don’t know who the strong military countries were back then outside of U.S. Seems it would have been impossible though. Would have taken multiple countries and even then probably wouldn’t have worked

At the end of the Civil War, the Union Army alone was the largest professional army in the world by a LOT. It was larger than many of the other world powers of the time COMBINED. And that was just the Union. The remnants of the Confederate army still had enough manpower and resources to go toe to toe with any European power in 1865.

The short answer is HELL NO. Combined, they had enough men and resources to literally run roughshod over every army in Europe. What they lacked was a blue water navy capable of transporting them there.

Germany wanted to get Mexico into WWI with the desire of reclaiming all the territory lost from the Mexican-American War 70 years earlier. If someone made it worth their while maybe so but it was so difficult to build a force and sustain it for that task in the 1800s.

At that time, Mexico couldn't even hold their own country.

France invading through Mexico to restore the territory lost in the Mexican American War. I doubt that they would've been able to keep it up for long but such were the limits of logistics at that time.
