It's actually South Korea that does this.

so let me get this straight, you love an cherish America's freedom so much that you believe in forcing all citizens to contribute 2 years of their life to protecting that freedom? Do you not see how that belief contradicts itself
Once again, point out where I said you should be FORCED to serve? I said you should be willing to serve and anyone who is unwilling to serve yet wants to enjoy the benefits of citizenship, to me they're a worthless piece of cowardly shite.

I did not say anything about "mandatory" military service. My point was that if you live in this country and enjoy it's bounty, then you should be WILLING to stand and defend this country. Compulsion to serve should not be required. The saying "freedom isn't free" is more than a bumper sticker slogan.
and if you will reread The Third Leg's first post you will notice that he never said he wouldn't join the military, just that he would refuse if they forced him to because it is an infringement of his rights.

Thailand.
Pattaya Beach, Thailand was an adult disneyland.
But Olangapo, Philippines...oh wow...I spent more time raising hell there then any port in Asia...

This idea of willingness is entirely dependent on the nature of the conflict.
Would I be willing to fight if someone invaded America? You bet your Auburn-loving arse I would.
Would I be willing to fight in the Middle East for realpolitik? LOL

My Navy buddy said Asia was fun...but Perth, Australia was probably his wildest.
I had fun in Perth, but honestly it was like docking in San Diego.

I could probably make more money abroad, and keep more of it. I don't need to be here to do my thing. The government is enjoying the bounty, not me.
Public schools are fricked, healthcare is fricked, and the justice system is fricked; yet here I sit funneling thousands of dollars to fuel a gluttonous mass of dominant authority - and I should be grateful for this bounty?

Then what are you waiting for? Is someone holding you here against you will? If the rest of the world is so awesome, move.

I second this notion. Third leg said he would renounce citizenship before submitting to a draft. Given what I know about when and how we draft, I find that thought pretty offensive.
And the thought that he has paid enough taxes not to have to serve is laughable.
Not one single principle justifies this stance. This is the real world, not some sophomore civics class.

They're the ones who claim to cherish freedom, all at the same time.
I was always proud (both in and out) of my time in the Navy, the whole idea of being at the "tip of the sword" was pretty cool to me.
It obviously was not for everyone and certainly not for leeches like yourself.

What a magnanimous person, to stay in the USA despite all those hardships. Don't let the doorknob hit you in the arse, loser.

I'd be willing to bet that I've paid more taxes in my lifetime than you've earned to this point, and I've been all over the world and have been in harms way. As shitty as it seems to you junior, it's as good as it gets.

I though about going Coast Guard after college, but changed my mind when the recruiter said there was a possibility of being shipped off to serve in Alaska. Too cold and wet for my blood.

I like it here, and my family is here; that is why. I will not like it here if my freedom is taken from me, and then I will leave.
I know these concepts of real freedom are not easily understood.

You should be grateful that you have the ability to say these words.
There are a lot of places in this world where you don't get this opportunity or worse if you do...they are your last words.

It is now. It won't be if my freedom is taken from me.

I think 2-4 year mil service at reaching 18 should be mandatory.
You'd actually weaken the military by doing that.
Quality over quantity wins out every time.

Right, he'd be a draft dodger. and a loser.
P.S. We don't have peacetime drafts.........
