The Founding Fathers of this nation-state vehemently disagree with you,

Considering that I pay taxes for those services, I see no problem with that viewpoint.

ETA: Not that I want to pay them.

All the time. I actually tried to enlist in the Air Force when I was 18 but they said I would never see the inside of a cockpit since I am color blind

Sadly, what we have nowadays is a generation who stomp their feet and demand "freedom" more so than any generation before but precious few of them are willing to accept paying the price of that freedom.

The military is turning people away. There is no shortage of people willing to sign up "to defend our freedom," but ignore that because it doesn't fit your agenda.

Im sorry, but few of the actions committed by the military in the last 30-40 years have been to "protect freedom". Invading Iraq and bombing Libya didn't protect our freedom in any way. Just because you're in the military doesn't mean you have protected America's freedom.

I'm a donor citizen, bike man. I get far less out of the government than I put into it. I've paid enough federal income tax over the past decade to cover what the median earner will pay in his lifetime. Considering much of that has gone to finance military endeavors, I'd say I have done my part.

A fine American tradition. During the Civil War such notables as Grover Cleveland, George Pullman, and J.P. Morgan paid poor immigrants $300 to serve in their place.

To those on the fence. If you are thinking about going in and have really thought it through, do it and don't look back. I grew up in a USMC family. It's all I knew growing up as a kid and I was dead set on going in right out of high school. However, I was somewhat intelligent and my mom begged me to go to college first and my Marine relatives told me about being an Officer. So I went through the PLC program but sadly had an eye injury which required surgery that completly fricked up my vision and in the Bill Clinton years, that was a deal killer. He gutted the military worse than Obama in the 90's. So, my dream of being a Marine were over really before they begun.

Throw a decade and some change on those digits and you'll be more accurate. I don't know too many twenty year olds that have paid those kinds of taxes.

And yes, mandated military engagement is tyranny; it always has been and always will be.

Do the people calling for mandatory military service have any idea how expensive it would be? Our debt would skyrocket and balancing the budget would be (more of) a pipe dream. It's not remotely feasible.

I bet most of them are small gov conservative types too.

I think 2-4 years of military should be mandatory out of high school. Would make for a more mature country for sure.

so let me get this straight, you love an cherish America's freedom so much that you believe in forcing all citizens to contribute 2 years of their life to protecting that freedom? Do you not see how that belief contradicts itself?

the military is a much better thing to look back on than to actually do.

Be happy you're not all fricked up by multiple tours in the shite, and appreciate the poor bastards who did and are.

I did not say anything about "mandatory" military service. My point was that if you live in this country and enjoy it's bounty, then you should be WILLING to stand and defend this country. Compulsion to serve should not be required. The saying "freedom isn't free" is more than a bumper sticker slogan.
