well everyone in the navy these days has a drinking problem, so i reckon I'm in the right place.
And please excuse my language, but frick all you pusscakes who wouldnt man up for your country in a heartbeat. It ain't about the complexities of current world affairs, or even politics for that matter. It's about being a fricking man, and standing up for what you believe in. And i dont always agree with the "higher ups," so to speak; but, for me, it has always been about the principle of contributing to the betterment of my country .
And i know, for GOD DAMN sure, if you are not willing to serve a nanosecond for your country--be it in need, or not-- your will never have the stones to do a fricking thing to make this country a better place.
eta: I'm enlisted, im dumb, but i mean well

If Jury Duty posed a potentially mortal outcome, I would feel the same way. It does not.
Furthermore, Jury Duty enables ordinary people to influence their government and regulate authority. It is far from tyrannical, it is exactly the opposite; it puts the power in the hands of citizens to decide the fate of their peers.
Jury duty is a necessary inconvenience for a fair and balanced legal system.

I see a lot people who have misconceptions about military service.
Slaves don't get paid, dumbass.
People don't realize that many respectable (i.e. modern western) nations require military service at a certain age.
There are some issues with drafts that we especially came to light during Vietnam. You had so many shitbirds coming in that any positive influence the military culture might have had on them was completely overwhelmed as they banded together.
The modern all volunteer force has a few advantages. For one, everyone serving has agreed to do so. They want to be there. This creates career military members who are very professional and proficient at what they do. Unfortunately its also created almost a completely separate culture in the military with entire families living on bases and the rest of the general public largely apathetic to what service members do. It creates a lot of ill feelings in the military towards the civilian population

Again, as a juror you have the power to actually avoid the mortal conflict with your engagement.

quote:What are you talking about? Innocent until proven guilty means no one is getting put to death unless the jury intervenes to make it so. Juries don't save people from impending deaths.

*FTR, I would wholeheartedly disagree with mandatory service, but your attempt to differentiate it from jury service is nonsensical.

the definition of slavery isn't being forced do something with out pay. Forcing someone into military service against their will is ABSOLUTELY slavery.

Do you feel the same way about jury duty?
I've been trying to get on jury duty since the day I turned 18. Getting to go downtown, sit in an air condition room, judging people while my lunch is paid for. That is the life, man.

Forcing you to live up to your responsibility is slavery. Nice.
Taxes are theft too, AMIRITE?

Don't get discouraged, by the time you turn 19, you will be called.

Honest to god don't expect you too. I kinda forced my way into the service, and I kinda got riled up with all this talk. Thanks bruh, I appreciate it

in typical OT fashion this thing went off on a tangent, but not answering the call of duty(draft,) and not paying your taxes will land you in jail, freedom isn't free

Simply saying you will never vote guilty if it could result in an execution will free you of that conflict. You will never be on that jury. And you shouldn't have to be.
That is freedom. You state your opinion, your belief; and that opinion and belief is respected by the parties involved.
If you feel that is cowardly, when chosen, simply refusing to vote guilty will hang a jury, considering most thresholds of guilt are that of unanimous decision. Simply refusing to vote to recommend the death penalty to the judge will usually thwart that outcome as well, unless you're in one of three states.
You are often given the power to hugely impact the process. Without jury duty, the legal system would fail to remain fair, as all the power would be concentrated with authority, thus, creating a tyrannical system of government.

I'm a donor citizen, bike man. I get far less out of the government than I put into it. I've paid enough federal income tax over the past decade to cover what the median earner will pay in his lifetime. Considering much of that has gone to finance military endeavors, I'd say I have done my part.
As a vet, I'd like to thank you for paying your taxes. We owe you so much.
Some people don't realize that a price was paid for the freedom and prosperity that we enjoy. By the way, if you are so principled in your stand against war, why would you agree to paying taxes that bankrolled war? You should have refused to pay taxes, and go to jail, or move to Switzerland.
Or are you ok with your country waging war as long as YOU don't have to fight? If so, that's called being a coward.
