You'd actually weaken the military by doing that.
Quality over quantity wins out every time.

so you believe the draft during the Vietnam war was justifiable?
I do.

How would we have carpet bombed Laos for decades without them?

as I pointed out, the Viet Nam era draftees were considered to be the most educated/brightest conscripts in our history
And while that may be true, conscripts today would likely just fill the ranks with people who don't belong anywhere near a military installation. It's a different time.
And I say this as a guy who put in 8 years, US Army.

I wish I could join the Air Force, they have some fine looking women.
Then again, I'd be a total pussy.

Loved my four years in the A.F. Been half way around the world. Met people from all over the country. Enjoyed the commaraderie, the esprit de corps, and dammit had a good time. You get out of the service what you put in it. So if you go in with a bad attitude you probably not going to enjoy it. It sucked some I'll admit, but those times made up less than 5 percent of my service. I sometimes regret not staying in and making it a career.

What would they do with all the fatties these days? I'm sure over 50% of the people who get drafted would be overweight or obese/

My wifes (no pics) best friend (also no pics, hah) joined the Air Force and she is pretty hot. She works on Air Force 2 and some of the pictures she post are unreal.

same as everything else these days, if they don't meet the standards, then change the standards, interesting topic, no simple solutions

Nah I disagree....
Everyone is different and it doesn't make some mature as fast, some it will help others not so much. Just like anything else in life really, throw a 18 year old into the real world working making his own way it will mature him as well.

My sentiments exactly.

Third leg said he would renounce citizenship before submitting to a draft. Given what I know about when and how we draft, I find that thought pretty offensive. And the thought that he has paid enough taxes not to have to serve is laughable.
Actually, I think you're confused. My tax contribution statement was in response to Darth's claim that I would have somehow bilked the system by renouncing my citizenship.
A citizen who has paid zero taxes should have the freedom and power to decline serving in a military engagement. But I can see how you might call them out for enjoying all the fruit for free, so long as you deemed the conflict to be utterly necessary to the survival of the nation.
Forcing servility to a nation-state is the ant-thesis of the American Foundation.

I would renounce US citizenship before being forced to enter a military engagement against my will, regardless of circumstance.
It's really not even a question for me; such a mandate is an abhorrent infringement upon my pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The above was in response to the below and they were my original opinions on mandatory service.
