They are not "real doctors". But neither is a plastic surgeon.

Ask Scruffy how difficult it is to get into a plastic surgery residency.

While you guys are in this thread...
With good recommendation, 3.2 gpa, and a BS from a school like AU what would you consider to be the minimum DAT score required to get into dental school?

20+
Gonna be hard getting in with a 3.2 I would think though.
Average GPA for my class was ~3.65
Also matters about EC like shadowing, volunteering, clubs, etc..

Thanks. Close friend of mine was applying, had the above, and scored an 18 on his DAT. He and I were going to be in the process of applying to our respective schools at the same time and he backed out and kept saying he didn't have a chance. I always thought it was crazy to not even apply but he would never listen to me.
Ya it sure hurt me

You're gonna need a bigger boat!

You never know. I took some extra classes at LSU after I graduated and started working as a research assistant. Met with the dean of admissions several times and ended up with an interview. Don't get discouraged tho. It's easy to do that

Average acceptance for dental schools is ~19 DAT and ~3.5 GPA and a lot of schools have a cut off if you make <18 on any single part of the DAT.
People have gotten in with scores like that, or even lower, before but it's more like an outlier, not the norm.
A lot of other things factor into it though. Age, job experience, post-grad education, who you know, what school you are applying to, extracurriculars, etc..
It's obviously to late now, but if he ad $350 to blow he might as well of just applied to get his name on their radar for the future and theres always that chance he could get in.

That chapter closed in his life years ago. I don't know any dentists personally and always wondered if his assumptions were correct

Seriously, though, good luck.
Make sure you are on a first-name basis with the gals in the admission office. Sweet talk them, inquire about the wait list, ie show interest. This could help get you an interview and even admittance if you are a borderline candidate.
If you don't get in this year, I would suggest moving to Birmingham and doing research with someone at the UABSOD. Getting a MPH in the meantime with a project relevant to dental health would really help bolster your application, too.

They are doctors of dentistry.
They are professionals and their payment structure is better than medicine.

Nice to know every profession rips you at every stage of education. For vet school you just have to submit a single application that you then pay per school you send that too. There's also supplemental applications per school and sometimes additional fees. If you apply to all 30 schools you're looking at bout $3000. I applied to 2

A doctor doesnt just pertain to medical doctors... You can have a doctorate in something else therefore you are technically a "doctor"

So they also have to go to med school? That doesn't make sense
dentsists go to dental school. they know about one percent of someone that goes to med school
This is ignorant
They know about 100x more than general physicians know about teeth.
