This is why I try to refer to a medical doctor as a physician.
The term "doctor" out of context is quite vague. However, in SAE when someone states that they are a doctor it is generally assumed that they are a medical doctor. Which is why many states now require medical professionals to state what type of doctor they are when introducing themselves in a clinical setting.
Regardless, doctor originally meant teacher which is where PhD's came from. So as my uncle, a DVM and PhD, says "only PhDs are real doctors.
