So, has everyone finally come to the conclusion that dentists aren't doctors?

It's about time.

They make their staff call them Dr. Whatever so they are indeed doctors.

Well, just because Scruffy has everyone call him King of Earth doesn't mean that he is the King of Earth.

Maybe it's a dentist bylaw.

Next time someone is dying, ask a dentist to help and tell me if he is a doctor.

You like to blow hot air about things you think you know about, I get that. You also think that you are the only enlightened one and the rest of the public is in the dark and ignorant, I get that too.

The thing I really don't get is why you are on this anti dentite crusade. Did you get molested while on nitrous or something?

It sure seems like it to me. I asked what you do for a living, not a very personal question on an anonymous message board, don't you think?

I have a buddy in med school, and both of his parents are dentists, and he says dental school is harder than med school, so take that for what it's worth.

This question arises from time to time for a couple different reasons:
1) People don't understand the distinction between "doctor" and "physician" If you are falling to the ground amidst the crushing pains of a myocardial infarction and yell for a "doctor," you may find yourself the recipient of CPR from a nearby English professor. And that is what you asked for.
2) Most people, especially physicians, are jealous of dentists' hourly wages and work hours.

How would he know that it is more difficult if he has never gone to dental school. Doesn't seem like he would have any basis to compare besides what his parents told him.

Vet School is harder than both anyway

There's that dentist arrogance that's so charming. I'd have a beer with you and tell you to GFY like I do with all my buddies that practice art of dentistry. They are all good guys but much like you appear to be. I think you guys are permanently mad because of the always lovely physician vs dentist debate. A salty bunch. It is fun when the dentist beer drinking buddies are around the physician beer drinking buddies. I love to get them started.

We've heard from several dentists.

Still waiting for the doctors to chime in

He was very familiar with the process or both, since he considered both. And some of his really rigorous classmates went to dental school, and he sticks with that belief (even though med school is brutal).

Yes. It's true that he doesn't know for sure. But knowing him, if he is picking the other side, I tend to believe him.

I think it would be easier to pass med school than pass dental school.

However, if you don't want to specialize like 90% don't wind up doing...its probably significantly less stressful to pass dental school than have to fight for class position to get a good med residency

don't flatter yourself.

And yea dentists are obviously doctors as well. Too many people let egos get in the way of stuff when it comes to things like this.

And people care if someone works 3.5 days a week? Some people find free time more important and are willing to sacrifice extra income for more free time. Guess what? Some physicians (as well as people in a ton of other careers) do it too.

Who has more than one dentist friend. Maybe you are a member of a Country Club where all these dishonest dentists spend the money that was stolen from their unsuspecting patients.

Or

You are a lab man that is seeing your business model erode right in front of you because you failed to transition to automated manufacture of your product.

Or you were molested.

Whatever, I worked in Biotech for ten years prior to dental school. I spent most of my time dealing with physicians in the hospital as well as their offices. I could have easily gone to med school, but seeing the work load and stress level of the physicians I worked with, I decided to go the dentist route. I truly enjoy what I do and really don't worry about the "are dentists real doctors" bullshite.

I practice dentistry, as much or as little as I want. I do get interested in these threads when people who think they know my business get all mouthy and try run down my profession with uninformed opinions. You won't find me, running down your profession, because I naturally know that you know more about what you do than me (whatever that is).

This is a big difference, especially for more competitive specialties.

That being said, I doubt one is easier than the other and while there's a lot of similarities there's a lot of differences too. Med school clinical rotations are a lot more time consuming than dental rotations but (from friends I've talked to) dental labs are much more time consuming than those in med school.

All that really matters is that in the end, everyone gets to do what they want to do. I have no interest in being a dentist but my friends in dental school have no interest in being a physician.
