Federal holiday. Juneteenth baw. It's the day we celebrate all the slaves being free. Well, except for the slaves in the Union slave states that weren't actually freed until the 13th was ratified. But that really doesn't matter because Juneteenth and shite son!

Why is it called "Juneteenth"? Why not "June 19th"?

Markets are open, so at least the banks should be.

It's weird to me that we're celebrating Juneteenth not on June 19th. It's like having Cinco de Mayo on May 4th. Just seems like one of those "holidays" that should be celebrated only on the day of its namesake. But I guess a day off for government employees is more important.

Nah, December 6th. January 31st was only the day it passed Congress. Was not ratified by the minimum amount of states to be legally binding until December 6th.

But good to see that others understand that slavery still existed after Juneteenth.

FIFY

I have one employee on my staff that cared about us getting today off. Most of us had appointments scheduled for today that we had to call off at the last minute because the President couldn't wake up and sign the bill yesterday morning.

I doubt the majority of government employees care about this holiday at all--kind of like Columbus Day. It's just a random day off now that most government employees will have to be reminded of each year.

True, but that's going to get lost in the Thanksgiving/Christmas shuffle.

Oh I totally agree. January 31st would still make a hell of a lot more sense than "Juneteenth."
