I’ve always wanted to drive a UPS truck. Hit the open road and deliver packages. Seems like a relaxing job that pays decent

You think relaxing is carrying heavy packages in the heat and driving a truck that has no air conditioning?

I have a buddy that's a UPS driver. He makes 100k some years but works a lot of overtime in shitty weather. He'll probably retire at 55 though and I'll still be working.

Yes.

Very physical job.

Depending on which center/hub you work at you could be a part-timer for a long time.

You aren't getting the dolly out at every stop to carry it over a curb, around the trash cans, over the wet grass, and their gravel sidewalk that's 80' long when you need to make that 11am guaranteed delivery 2 miles down the road in 3 minutes.

Do you/they get bonuses based on delivery times met?

It's been 15 years since I worked for an operator for DHL/Airborne Express...but yes, the owner had to meet certain performance metrics to get paid the full value of the delivery contract with the shipping company.

And if you missed too many of these without a reasonable excuse (late freight, broken truck, etc.) you were getting fired.

I bought a 130lb heavy bag off of Amazon. I bet they had fun lugging that fricker around.

First one got “lost” once it got to the truck and was out for delivery.

In his case no kids. Those guys are teamsters and have a pretty lucrative retirement. It's not really a job that most people could physically do at 60. They retire relatively young.
