If so, what type (utility/design)...and how much did it cost?

Best comments ever regarding a patent were told to me by a guy once:
If you are asking how much it costs to get the patent you are asking the wrong question.
It doesn't matter what it costs.
It matters if you have enough money to defend it and are willing to do so.
Big corporations violate patents ALL THE TIME. They look at the little dude who holds the patent and how much they can profit from it and make a business decision. Can this guy afford to drag us into court and spend tens (or hundreds) of thousands to defend this? If not, we will move forward.
That being said, if your intent is to GET the patent and then SELL it, then yes you should get it.

I’m in the process of this. Meeting with a parent attorney this week to get the whole rundown. It’s for a medical device.

One Design and several utility patents granted. Also have extensive experience as licensee/licensor.
Lots of variables... # & complexity of claims, continuations in part, how many revisions etc. Lower end of the spectrum is $10-15K.
Free advice:
-IP is only worth your ability to defend it in court. Would be infringers likely have deep pockets and will drag things out until you're broke.
-Design patents are usually weak and easier to get around.
-Lots of patented ideas are designed (worked) around. Filing continuations in part helps but gets expensive, quickly.
-Broad is good but harder to obtain. Don't paint yourself into too tight of corner.
-Don't sign a licensing agreement without minimums and having an attorney look it over.
If your idea isn't novel and truly innovative... getting a patent is likely a waste of time. IP isn't a requirement for massive commercial sucess. Yeti coolers and cups are nothing new and they crushed it. Being first to market is a huge advantage.

I sought a patent but the cost prohibited me from going through with it.
My FIL has 20 some odd patents through his employer. One is the compound that lead to line x.

That was my experience ten years ago. I would expect the costs to be much higher today.
I have eight patents but all were paid for and assigned to employers as a condition of employment so I get no royalties but I also have no maintenance problems. Drafting the applications is a big task and needs to be extremely carefully done. Always think about what you would do if you were someone who wanted to break the patent and then block that avenue.

No, but I've always wanted to do patent drawings (modeling). I did do a production drawing for a guy that was getting something mass produced in China. Was pretty fun other than having to model it in Autocad to get the required precision.

A family friend bought the distribution rights for a patented product that was meant to replace the big chilled bottled water distributors you see in doctor office lobbies and many companies. It was a dehumidifier, water filter, chiller all in one in the same shape and look of those big 5 gallon water bottles/ chillers. They had 60 made in China and a factory set to be built, however, the Chinese didn't build to specs and they kept breaking. They fought for years with them, leading to the Chinese saying we don't care about the patent and deal fell through. Family friend and co-investors lost 6 million bucks.
