We did in the late 60s.

My grandparents were on one. Their ring was one long and one short. My grandmother's sister who lived next door was two shorts. The other person on the line was one long ring. If you went to make a call and somebody was already on the phone, you hung up.
My family was on one in the 60’s and 70’s. It didnt bother you too much because we didnt talk on the phone that much. It was quite the damper in my teen yrs…

A little OT, but does anyone remember when calling other nearby parishes was "long-distance" for BTR folks, but the other neighboring parishes had a plan that let them dial BTR without it costing per the minute? Those of us in BTR would call our friends collect, hang up and let them call us back.

When I was a kid, we had one, and my nanan and parrain had one; they lived right down the street, and I was there almost as much as at home.

My families camp house on Lake Bistineau had one. It was crazy to figure out. Drunk me answered the other ones calls numerous times.

I worked on them back in the day, the rural 8 party lines were a pain in the arse. One person would leave the phone off hook and you had to go try to figure out who it was. Also open wire leads feeding rural areas was no fun at all to work on.

Are you one of my long lost grandsons?? => We had a party line when I was young - 1940s - out in the country in Vernon Parish. That was our ring - one long and one short - it was a four party line - a box on the wall with a crank to turn the magneto. Dad was upset with one of the 'party line' partners = an old woman who would listen in on every call.
We moved into town in mid 40s and had a real phone - ph# 3367. But we kept the one out in the country too until we got 'modern electricity and phones' out there. Then we moved back to the country in the early 50s.
When I think of 'home' that is the place I concur up. :sigh:

Yes…we had two short rings. Also, the phone company owned all telephones…they rented them to you through a charge on your bill.

We had one. Bummer when you want to call your girlfriend and someone is on the phone. You keep picking up every two minutes till they hang up.
Also lived in a sparsely populated area in East Texas and the phone numbers for local calls were only four digits.

I remember stories my mom told about when she was a teenager and was on the phone with friends and overhearing conversations between her aunts. But I never been on one. That was before my time.

Back in the 60’s we had a party line and our number was only 1 digit off from the Ford dealership parts department. We got a lot of calls for them.
Did you try to be funny and answer the call pretending to be the parts department and take someone’s order and tell them to come pick it up?

Not much different than today with cellphones, unless you decide to skip the latest and greatest, every 3 years is an upgrade year and you extend your payment plan.

When I visited my grandparents out in the country (70's) I'd listen to girl across the road chat with her boyfriend. I had the hots for her.

And they were heavy and nearly indestructible.

Not since the early 1970s. Horrible to have to wait your turn.
