I got sick of Gillette, and Jeremy’s didn’t work that well. So I bought a Naked Armor kit. (Carbon steel, Damascus).

I freaking love it. Any good baw tips on straight razor shaving?

I know I’m a ways off on this, but any good sharpening services in south Louisiana or NOLA?

Just get a leather strop and learn how to use it (learn how to use it on anything but your razor).

Never used one myself cause I was told by a barber that strait razors are difficult for self-use. Great shave, but you can cut yourself pretty good as opposed to another persons shaving you with one.

The two biggest are probably (1) never having to overpay for a cartridge blade again and (2) you have a bit more control in getting into tight spots with a straight razor. You also probably get a more comfortable shave (less irritation) if you know how to use a straight razor well.

That said, they are much less "user friendly" than cartridge razors, which could easily lead to many more nicks and cuts. And, honestly, you aren't going to get a significantly closer shave (despite what the marketing tells you)

In January I started using a safety razor I received as a Christmas present. It's fine. The cost of replacement blades is MUCH cheaper. But I don't find it gives a significantly closer shave than my old Schick 3 blade. Not a bad shave by any means. Just not incredibly closer for the increased "work" that comes with using a safety razor. I will say though that even if the shave isn't significantly "closer", I don't get nearly as many bumps or irritation that I would sometimes get with the cartridge. That's probably because the safety razor doesn't "lift and cut" the hair under the skin line.

Only a couple of nicks so far.

It forces you to slow down.

I use one to line up my beard on my cheeks; its easier to make a cleaner line, for me at least. I still use a regular disposal along my neck line.

never used one. And those scenes of men letting someone else shave them with a straight razor make me nervous.

There is not a person on this earth that i trust enough to allow them to hold something that sharp close to my throat.

That's what I've learned. I can get the right side of my face real good but once I have to use my left hand it gets a little dicey. Switched to a safety razor and haven't looked back since.

Has not been as big a problem as I thought it would.

So far, though, the upper and lower lip areas are very, very difficult.

I guess I've been using one so long I don't see any extra "work". I keep a beard so only shave my neck and cheeks, but I can knock it out way faster than with a cartridge. The blade cleans out faster and more passes between needing to rinse it.

I don't know why, but I started tossing around the idea of trying a straight razor over the last few days. I sharpen my chisels and plane blades for woodworking and always check that they are sharp enough with a quick "can it shave" check. Just something satisfying in it, so figure truly shaving that way might be nice.

Anyone else notice how much longer a Mach III cartridge lasts now since the emergence of Harry's and the like

Mine last like three times as long now as they did maybe 2-3 years ago

Can’t speak to straight razors, but I switched to a safety razor about 8 years ago and haven’t looked back.

The shave is so much better than any cartridge razor, and it’s much less irritating to my neck. Also, great value proposition. I think in that 8 years I’ve spent less than $50 total on replacement blades. Feather blades are incredible.

Much better middle ground than trying to go full on straight razor yourself.

Razor will last a lifetime if taken care of, razor blades are infinitely cheaper(and sharper) than the overpriced and over marketed crap you get with Gillette/Harrys/Jeremys Etc.

Its important that you drink and incessantly talk about IPAs, call movies "films", and drive a Subaru.

I primarily use a safety razor, but use a straight edge on the weekends when I can take my time. Practice and keep your blade sharp, and you’ll get very good quickly.

I bought a cheap straight edge to practice using the whetstones before I used them on my nicer blade.

Not that dude. Nor am I a vegan or crossfitter.

But damn. I'm tired of paying for plastic crap with a huge premium on it for advertising. And I am tired of having a drawer full of them when I can't tell how old there are or whether my wife has used them to shave her legs.

Plus, and I'm being honest here, it looks pretty badass on my bathroom counter.

I'm messing with you. All of the above is dead on accurate. I unload on my wife when I catch her doing that
