Any folks here live in Boise?

Wife may be getting a job offer there. What are the good areas to live in? Where should we avoid? She'd be working near the airport, and I'll be WFH.
No kids, so schools aren't an issue.
Budget for a house would be 800k or so.

I’m still in Bollinger’s head from High School athletics, so yes.

Pretty sure 800k would build you a pretty sweet house in Boise… Be sure to put in a nice man cave..

We were looking at property in Star at one point. Really nice little area.

I am guessing the crime rate is low. Get an apartment for 6 months while you learn neighborhoods, traffic, etc.

I can come back and answer this later. $800k will get you a decent home in a nice area.
My preliminary advice is live in Boise, stay out of the rest of the valley. It's not bad traffic compared to SF, ATL, Chicago, Dallas, etc. but we don't have a loop and our only interstate runs E/W. All N/S traffic is main roads. It can be hell during rush hour, especially because they have NOT prepared for the insane growth.
Also, there isn't much to do in other areas. Some folks will tell you otherwise, but it's all strip malls and chain retail/dining west of Vista. If you like that sort of entertainment, you will have A LOT of housing options and can extend your search into Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Star, or Eagle depending on your wife's willingness to commute.
My favorite part of town is Southeast Boise. Not much room for sprawl because of the land out there and easy access to the greenbelt no matter where you are. Also easiest access to the foothills and Lucky Peak.

If you have to commute into downtown Boise...avoid Star. Chinden and State Street are both a bear.

Boise is a pretty sweet central spot to jump off into other states.

I spent a couple days in Boise for a work conference a few years back and it seemed a pretty pleasant and safe place. The only thing that would give me pause is I'm guessing the winters are pretty cold there but that probably doesn't matter as much to some.

800k home with no kids sounds kinda wasteful, IMO
But do you

If Boise doesn't work out, it sounds like Baton Rouge could be a second option.

I wouldn’t to it! After reading this article, it sounds like a terrible place!

Keep your expectations tempered. Boise no longer lives up to the reputation that has preceded it. Mainly uncontrolled growth and high cost of living. Lot's of transplants have jammed the place up but it still beats out most other cities it's size otherwise. Idaho is amazing and probably the last frontier of the lower 48 with it's conservative stronghold.
If she works near the airport I would look to stay South of the Interstate. Check out Muir Woods subdivision and surrounding neighborhoods at that price range. Maybe Kuna if you can find anything. Last summer you didn't even have to put up a sign to get offers over asking price. Now people are staying put and inventory is way lower. But if you're not in a hurry you should be fine. You may be able to get into a new build at that price, but you would be able to jump from roof to roof with a small lot and s/f.

Maybe they make a couple million a year? $800k may be conservative for them. Not everyone is OT Poor.
