In my most athletic days I could do all the optimum ones except that swim. That swim really weeds a lot of folks out. I just never could get into swimming laps and working on form. Today…I would fall somewhere between the minimum and optimum except for the swim again.
And the swim leads off, which impacts performance on everything else. Events are tested at 10 minute intervals.

That is really what separates you making it through BUD/S is having the mind set that you will not quit. It's not like you have to be a workout warrior, just be in good enough shape to finish what the instructors throw at you and just be able to survive some miserable arse sometimes downright frigid surf conditions for 6 months. I know a bunch of Frogmen and BUD/S was literally a cake walk once they make it to the Teams. Shite, only a few are guys that I would say holy frick, this guy is a DEVGRU class Navy SEAL. Most of them look like surfers and not your typical military guy walking around with a high and tight looking fresh out of boot.
This. Shite a lot of guys could make it from here. IF you really wanted it bad enough. That’s the million dollar question. How bad do you want it? If it’s “I’d be cool”, the surf will kill you lol. If it’s the only place on earth you want to be you will make it through buds

it's also breast or sidestroke why?
Stealth.
Underwater recovery is much quieter than freestyle / butterfly / backstroke.

Breaststroke is an easy and powerful stroke and allows you to keep head/eyes up and on your destination and/or things going on around you. Lifeguards are taught to always use breast so they can keep eyes on their victim in choppy water.
Sidestroke allows the lower hand to be free for pulling equipment, ropes, an injured person, etc. You can still generate good power with front hand & both legs, and you can see.
Also, after the fitness test swim you are gassed and arms & legs are rubbery, so folks can't max out on the other event in the test sequence.

An issue is that after the swim, you aren't at your normal levels on the other events. Not even close for many.

Why would you try this out of the blue though? Its a fitness test that most people would train for. Sure if you never swim laps you'll be gassed. But swimming 500 yards is not that crazy, plenty of people that swim for a work out swim a lot more than that daily. College swimmers will swim 10,000 yards a day during practice.
Even if you were to train for 6 months and you were already in decent shape like most young military guys and running 10 miles or so a week, being able to swim 500 yards and run 1.5 miles in that time is not asking THAT much. Its good shape yes, but not olympic athlete shape even.

I know I could get minimum since I swim 3200 in the Diversion in about 26 minutes
Not to be a dick but you don’t swim 3200 yards in 26 minutes lol.
------ correct!
The NCAA Div 1 record for 1650 yds is 14:11, and anything below 20:00 means you are a full time competitive swimmer affiliated with a high school, club or college.
So this poster thinks he can do 3200 yrds in 26:00??
