I do hope the good and learned members of the O.T. have good ant-freeze in their vehicles as well as recreational toys that call for it. Tractors included. Tonight in La. is block cracking weather. Engine blocks do come with freeze plugs built into them;however, you cannot rely on them. Good luck!

Had to put a new radiator in my truck about a month ago. Anti-freeze is good.

Smart water? Just buy a Reverse Osmosis system and use that. What could be harmful about near-pure water?

no less than 100,000 vehicles in Louisiana are going to have cracked engine blocks in the next 24 hours.

"Anti-freeze", "Coolant",and "Anti-boil" are the same thing.

If you have the proper diluted mix of ethylene glycol and water in your system for proper cooling in the heat you are likely protected from this mild freeze also. Yes, teens and single digits are mild in the rest of the world.

You only have risk if you run pure water or a poorly maintained system that does not have the proper ratio.

RV drinking water systems are particularly at risk in the South along with the "Summer Blend" windshield washer fluid we all use. Wellhouses also are at risk.

And a bunch in the southern Land Mass, Lower Alabama, and NW Florida too.

Single digit temps for 10+ consecutive hours gets engine blocks without “protection”.

Fake news.

If your car didn't over heat or boil over in the Summer you likely have enough ethylene glycol to protect it in sub-freezing temps.

You don't and won't hear widepsread stories about "frozen blocks".

If you run straight water, then yes you are in trouble. Some race vehicles and hobby cars might do that to comply with racing regulations (coolant spills are slippery on tracks).

I cranked a rental this past weekend when it was -24 outside trying to warm it up so we could get out and about (on vacation in Montana) and the engine light came on saying it had malfunctioned and needed to be checked out. It did crank though, and after warming up and restarting the car the message went away. a bit scary though to be sure

At -24 it was probably reading low oil level in the pan as it takes a very long time for thick oil to get back in circulation. Or perhaps low oil pressure from pump starvation.

Or some sensor was frozen up.

Yes, -24 F is a hard freeze but keep in mind vehicles run year round in lower temps but they typically live in heated spaces or have block heaters/battery blankets, etc. Especially diesels. Some run 24 hours a day if outside.

There are some youtube vids of crazy Canucks doing cold start videos of diesels in negative temps. The engines don't sound happy as the oil is like syrup at that point.
