80%+ of cpap users are overweight or obese

80% of America is overweight.
I am almost underweight, and I have to use a CPAP every night. Can't live without it. The air is like inhaling a drug every night. I also use an eyemask to block out little light like the wife's nightlight, etc. Love it.
The reason I need a CPAP is not a weight issue, it is simply I don't breathe. When I did the test, I stopped breathing 28 times an hour, for up to a minute at a time. That's not a I'm fat and have a hard time breathing.

The number one way to get rid of OSA is weight loss.
I've been doing this for 27 years. I've seen people morbidly obese get gastric bypass, lose over 100lbs and still have OSA. I just had a 45 y/o guy in my office that looked like he could run thru a brick wall. Another was a competitive body builder with a very small body fat percentage.

Are the majority overweight? Yes, but age factor is a much bigger percentage. If you are over 40 and snore, you probably have sleep apnea, regardless if you are considered overweight.

Sounds like you have central sleep apnea. I would guess that you use a bipap with a backup respiratory rate. If not, you probably have large tonsils and a narrow airway that tends to collapse when you get into deep stages of sleep where you are totally relaxed.

And I've seen overweight people lose weight and the problem disappear. Will it solve everyone's problem? No. Is it the best chance at a "cure" without CPAP/BiPAP? It is.

I'm speaking about strictly a physical cause of OSA beyond narrow/weak airways and neurological things.

I have a fighter pilot on CPAP and an 18 y/o guy who weighs 120lbs. More active duty guys than I can count, and a whole bunch of in shape cops.
There’s definitely lean folks on CPAP, no question, but they’re the exception. The vast majority of OSA cases (80%+) and by extension CPAP users (3 out of four) are overweight or obese. That’s just reality. Doesn’t mean anyone should feel bad, but it’s the main risk factor by a long shot.

My wife finally got her one and loves it. She's been fighting it since she was a 110 lb senior in high school.

I have seen her taking a nap on the couch gasping for air, it looks like agonal breathing. She finally did the at home test and she got set up.

Her events not breathing were lasting over a minute, I know damn well she can't hold her breath for a minute. I told her she was dying and causing brain damage

I get your point even if the comedians don't.

I might have a narrow airway... My sister had some type of surgery to open hers up after chronic issues of getting winded during exercising/running.
