The Krewe of Oshun has become the first Mardi Gras parading organization to announce that it will not roll in 2021. According to krewe captain Henry Smith, uncertainty over the ongoing coronavirus contagion caused “nervousness” among members, who were reluctant to commit to parading next year.

Smith said he understands their worry. In April, he was diagnosed with the COVID-19 infection after suffering a fever and cough. Several other krewe members were stricken as well, he said.

I’m beyond sick of this cancellation nonsense. It’s been 6 months. Six months too long and time to move the frick on.

'Toya gets everyone to cancel their parades due to uncertainty then she doesn't have to officially cancel the event.

Will probably say something about not having enough parades to justify the costs.

It's a small black krewe...not that surprising.

Wouldn't surprise me to hear that Cleopatra and Alla will cancel in the coming weeks next since they are on the same day.

Being on the same day had nothing to do with it. Krewes whose members could afford to pay dues during the pandemic won’t cancel. Smaller Krewes like Oshun who may not have been able to collect dues will start to cancel.

Oshun will be an outlier, not the trend. Lots of Krewes are gearing up for Mardi Gras 2021, most at near or full ridership.

And you think they will be throwing to who?

Will the city be renting socially distanced pods along the parade route?

You surely don’t think this will be back to business as usual for a major international event fueled by booze and people being in crowded areas with strangers, right?

There are millions of people in the state and region who aren't living in fear anymore, and who would love to regain some sense of normalcy.

Not a terrible idea, but the city of NOLA would find some way to screw it up.

A lot will happen in the world and country between now and the start of Carnival (aka November 3).

you mean a parade full of skinflints with throws, moving at twice normal parade speed, and no marching units...

That parade sucks anyway. When I lived Uptown I never minded working when Oshun rolled (before Cleo started rolling on Friday night) because getting home was a breeze.
