Alternate Route from Alex to Denham Springs
Posted by blueridgeTiger

Traveling from DFW to Denham Springs we usually continue on I-49 past Alexandria but then we encounter sometimes substantial delays going over the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge.
Looking at google maps yesterday, I see we could avoid the tie-ups at the I-10 bridge by taking LA-1 at Alexandria and crossing the Mississippi River on the new Audubon Bridge and pick up US-61 to Airline Highway.
Have any of you baws taken that route?

Either that or somewhat similar route and take old bridge off 190 and than to US-61 or you could even go through Central to eventually get to Denham

I do what the Waze app tells me to do. I stopped thinking for myself a long time ago.

Get on HWY 1 and take it to New Roads. Cross the bridge that no one uses into St Fracisville. Hwy 10 to Clinton. Then 63/16 to Denham.

Yes. The only thing that can get a little annoying is people driving slow on a two lane highway but it’s faster than I-10/49

Get off at Opelousas and take 190. Watch your speed through the little towns, but you shouldn't hit traffic. Take the old Mississippi River bridge into BR.

49 to 190 will save you 30 minutes vs I-10. Cross the old bridge, then take Choctaw out towards Denham Springs.

What time will this "drive" be taken?
After 8pm, you'll be ok until about 5am (barring unforseen accident).

When one of my kids went to LSMSA in Natchitoches he’d take that route through Alexandria on Hwy1 sometimes after picking up a kid in Denham. Usually he found it faster to take 190 over the old bridge to 49.

Much easier to take I49 to 190 in Opelousas (Exit 19), then take 190 across the Mississippi via the old bridge. That puts you on Airline Hwy in EBR and you can hop on 110 to get to 12, or take Florida the rest of the way to Denham.
Taking Hwy 1 and then the bridge to nowhere is a bit out of the way and will add a half hour or more to your trip.

I expect we'd be coming through BR between noon and 2:00 P.M.

LA1 to LA10 across the Mississippi River at New Roads. US61 south to Mt Pleasant - Zachary Rd. Take that all the way to Greenwell Springs Rd down to Magnolia Bridge. You got the rest from there.

Well shite. The "new" bridge may be backed up but if it's 1 pm just take I-49 south to US190. Then the old bridge across the river and I-110 south to I-10 then I-12.
If it's gonna be 5 pm take the LA1 back way.
1 pm go this way.

Airline hwy through BR is its own form of hell. You may avoid the interstate parking lot but there are endless red lights and you have to look at the bleakest urban landscape this side of Detroit.

Take that route all the time. La 1 can suck if you get stuck behind someone but it has to be a lot faster than 49 to I-10

True enough, but if he's heading to the north side of Denham, he can hop on Hooper or Greenwell Springs and avoid a lot of that.

Take the LA 1 or US 190 route.

If you find yourself anywhere near Baker be careful and I'm not just talking about the obvious, I'm also talking about these new mobile speeding cameras they put up on wheels on the shoulders. Got me the other day.

Def take 190. I go that way all the time. Plus you can make a pit stop at Billy’s boudin in krotz springs. Use the drive thru bc the inside of the store is a shite show and there will be 40 ppl in line.
