We are out of Mississippi but play a lot in Louisiana as well. Coach encourages playing other sports and willingly works around other sports schedules. We still played around 40 games this spring season

That's awesome. Props to your coach.

That's not normal especially in S. Louisiana.

So we play in the Southeast Showcase Series
LINK

Teams are made up with kids as young as 14.

This weekend in BR there was the Summer Slam at the Box with 14-18 year olds...

This weekend we are playing in a 2D event called the Big Easy Classic which will have class of 2021-2024 kids....these games are played at high schools across the metro area and UNO. Most, not all of these teams are high school summer teams that call themselves "legion" Like Jesuit....they call their upper class, better team their"legion" team...the other team is their "metro" team.

yea that is pretty common for hs age. and yea they play a shite ton but its only for through like july 4th for most places.

I dont remember them playing so much summer ball before last 2 years. been crazy as they been playing most days.

and you didnt offend me with the whole legion this. It was called that when i was playing. But some literally mean legion as it is still a thing.

Most of the travel ball stuff takes place during the weekends, rec ball is during the week...

These kids are still developing... I guess the more you play the more you get to face different kids, you'll only improve. Besides rec ball only cost 45 bucks..

Games yes, practices though for many travel teams are doing the week.

This is how it was structured when I was in HS. Summer ball was Legion (Varsity), AA Legion (JV) and metro (Freshman and incoming freshman).

Some teams would bring back their graduated seniors and even some players who had been in college for a year if their birthday was late enough. We did it after my freshman year. Brought all the seniors back and a guy who pitched for Southeastern. It’s bullshite IMO.

ETA: It can be a lot of baseball though. After my freshman year I played metro and AA and then dressed for legion. We had 4 of us in my class that did it though we never actually played in the legion games. We would be at the ball park all day 3-4 days a week.

I am sure this is covered.

Travel ball does nothing different than rec ball, the players may be great and play in Majors level stuff, may be great and on a poor team and be in a AAA level tourney. May be not real good and be in a AA team that is not much different than rec and definitely not as good as a rec all star team.

Also, you use travel and select interchangeably, they are not the same.

Lastly, they are 10. Who the hell knows what will happen when you put any of em at the plate or on the bump or the basepaths for that matter.

it is in the SWLA area. even a the HS ranks, they are very careful with the arms and very into S&C and arm care.

Laffy teams seem to be the ones that are most about 100-140 game seasons. BR being a close second. Nola, North LA and SWLA seem to be much more reasonable and taking a much longer game approach now. 5 or so year ago everything had gotten to the point of playing year around.

My kid is on a 12u Majors team.

They have 11 rostered kids, of those everyone plays at least one more sport, some two. I thought that was normal.

My youngest still plays rec and it sucks. Half the parents won't have their kids there. They make it hard on coaches, everything is disorganized, all stars is a joke. There is a reason so many want to leave. The lack of skill development is just one of the reasons.

In my experience it is very much a "white flight" situation.

The families with means leave rec ball to focus on travel. What's left in rec is then the poor kids, the single parent kids, the parents who can't be bothered to bring kids to practice, etc. Rec can't find any dads (or moms for that matter) to coach.

Rec ball didn't "suck" 30 years ago when there was no travel

my kids grew up in FL, travel ball teams were mostly social cliques from what I could see and there were usually about nine coaches for the boys, one for each position, guess who the starters were? as far as the girls, although they were pretty good they were definitely a social clique

They play this weekend in the metro area, then a round robin with some teams from Texas next week then off to Atlanta for the Perfect Game WWBA's...they should end towards the end of July

He's going to be a senior and just turned 17..he technically is a 16 year old but he's playing up with the 17 and 18 year olds

i know of coach in central, pitched 2 kids. One nearly through 100 pitches in 2 days. (90 in 1 day) and other kid through 115 in 2 days. 44 and 70 something. All in hot as hell conditions. probably typical weekend for them... bc its allowed due to inning counts, not pitch counts. Sorry forgot to add, this was 9u kids.

Talent is talent and a lot of talent doesn't play travel ball.

What you really mean is... the HS coach also coaches the travel ball team, and gets paid to coach the travel ball team... so he tells the best kids they better play travel ball so he gets paid...

dude you dont know what you are talking about. Yea IM sure Glenn C is saying....yea if you dont play for my travel ball team you cant play at barbe. A) glenn doesnt coach travel ball, B) do you really think the best HS coach in america gives two fricks where you played? he doesnt

guess what though, the best kids make the teams and magically the best kids seem to come from travel ball. Also happen to be the ones that are doign private lessons, doing S&C etc

Sam Houston is the same way, St Louis...the same.

so yes talent is talent, but the talent is playing high level travel ball. Sorry if you cant see that.

and when i say travel ball, i just mean USSSA, PG, 2d etc. I dont mean travelling all over the country. Most are not travelling more than 2-2.5 hours from home. Hell most arent travelling more than an hour for most of the tourneys.

My son only played one sport until 7th grade. Doesn’t hurt to focus on one sport and compete at a high level. I think it was better preparation than being mediocre at 3 sports.

The whole only travel ball will get you in to High School is a lie perpetuated by the likes of the USSA to make money. Fact.

I have been to about 250 tournament games over the last 5 years. I have never heard this said in any event USSSA or PG or othewise. For the most part people like to be able to pick their teams and teammates, pick their schedule and play similar teams. Most of the ones that brag about their kids are in the 8-9 or beginning stages of travel or they are new to the deal and just super excited.

They will be beaten down like the rest of us soon enough. My kid loves it. I offer him an out every year and every year he looks at me like I am nuts.

here we go with all the non athletes that are shitty parents trying to tell others how to parent.

news flash....my kid can stop travel ball at any time. In fact i tried unsuccessfully to talk my oldest out of it.

I encourage multiple sports or to be involved in other activities outside of sports.

not worried about them hating me, i dont pressure them at all.

Your son is going to end up going to a state school and chasing pussy and drinking beer like 99% of kids and resent you for making him play soccer 40 hours a week at 14 while other kids were having fun.

Sounds like yall just need to find a better organization that understands how to take a long term development approach and that eventually you have to raise the athletes base athletic floor to raise the overall ceiling on the player.

THIS is why travel ball gets such a bad name... because SO MANY of the teams don't do this.

There are a few travel ball "organizations" that are good with this. But there are a ton of single team groups that don't develop players worth a shite, made up of players that were not deemed good enough for the few actual decent organizations out there.

That's why everyone bagging on rec is so funny to me... some of the 8u and 10u teams playing travel are straight garbage and never improve. Meanwhile, they practice 5x a week, play every weekend, and have SWEET uniforms and walkup music.

But every tournament is play 2 on Satuday, 1 Sunday morning, then goof off rest of weekend out of town.
