THIS is why travel ball gets such a bad name... because SO MANY of the teams don't do this.

There are a few travel ball "organizations" that are good with this. But there are a ton of single team groups that don't develop players worth a shite, made up of players that were not deemed good enough for the few actual decent organizations out there.

That's why everyone bagging on rec is so funny to me... some of the 8u and 10u teams playing travel are straight garbage and never improve. Meanwhile, they practice 5x a week, play every weekend, and have SWEET uniforms and walkup music.

But every tournament is play 2 on Satuday, 1 Sunday morning, then goof off rest of weekend out of town.

In my experience it is very much a "white flight" situation.

The families with means leave rec ball to focus on travel. What's left in rec is then the poor kids, the single parent kids, the parents who can't be bothered to bring kids to practice, etc. Rec can't find any dads (or moms for that matter) to coach.

Rec ball didn't "suck" 30 years ago when there was no travel

its very much this. In general people started chaising better compitetion and then what was left was very very much a lack there of, other than a select few leagues. Liek east bank, laffy ll, SLC ll are decent in 12u....not great in others. And they are good then becasue some of the best players come back from travel and play at a chance to go to the LLWS.

But in general rec is disorganized and people get tired of the BS. That was the my issue and still is my issue. And honestly many kids want to play more.

but i find the 10u AA teams to be expontentially better than the rec all star teams. way way better.

in my case my kids asked to play. i had discouraged it for a long time. Now i look back and was like wtf was i think discouraging it. We have made great friends, are around great people and kids absolutely love it.

The fact that rec is disorganized is 100 percent related to the increase in average to below average kids only playing travel ball, and taking their dads, who would volunteer to coach, with them.

This of course, causes more people to leave rec for travel, and it just spins downward from there.

Unfortunately Karen and Kyle are turning baseball into what Golf and Tennis have always been. A sport where those with means get the youth training to be far ahead of their peers.

This really hurts the local community leagues.

this was all covered in that thread, subsidized by MLB but that doesn't stop the non "travel" ball types from playing sandlot ball during all daylight hours if possible, they're hungry for it, they love it, and they want TF off of that island!

I played all the travel ball shite before it was as serious as it is now. My last year of Rec I think was age 11. I started on my high school team for 3 years, made all district every year and all state my senior year. Had interest from a couple of schools to play in college.

But I also played basketball until high school, football through high school, played tennis for 2 or 3 years, soccer for a couple, etc.

yea im sure all 5'6 135 lbs had them college recruiters beating down the door

But sure man, making your kids practice or play baseball 7 days a week is a great idea. 99.9% of kids with enough talent to play past high school are going to be obvious, but if you think making your kid hate a sport and spending God knows how much money so he can hit 260 on the high school team is worth it, knock yourself out.

dude, nobody is talking abotu that much. We practice 2 days a week organized and if they ask for me to practice with them I will. Key word being ask.

and nobody is talking about playing after hs, college baseball schollies are dogshit anyways. Grades are way more important.

and who cares about the money? I see this brought up all the time, get a better job if you can afford it, but stop with the stupid arse shite about trying to make those that can afford it feel bad.

as far as making a kid hate a sport....well be a better parent. I would never force a kid to play any sport. We have a rule that if you start a season and commit to a team you must finish it out for the seaosn. Otehr than that, they can choose which sports they play and what type of league to play.

There is a shitload of money being pumped into the DR.....those kids that get the chance are being treated better than any kid on the Northshore Playing with the Knights

I think you and I are close in age and probably played baseball against each other, I remember playing whoever sponsored the Bossier Legion team at Walbrook one night, every player on the Bossier roster had been all something that year, and the all state MVP for 4-A(highest classification at the time,) Roger Cyr, was sitting on the bench for that game

JPRD's rec ball is still pretty organized... Like 08 said, not like 30 years ago though.

It was weird getting a letter asking kids if they were selected to play all stars if they were going to commit though...

I suggest that he doesn't have aspirations of making the MLB

I know at several SELA schools, especially public schools, the coaches moonlight as travel ball coaches, and there is very much an expectation that you play on their teams if you want to play in HS.

My son takes lessons from a high school coach. He makes all his clients sign a acknowledgment saying that if we ever attend his school after sixth grade and plan on playing baseball, then he cannot give lessons or coach them outside of school due to high school recruit violations. I would suspect this would also be an issue in Louisiana as well

Seems like you have only experienced the positives of travel ball, and not the negatives. You are pretty naïve for sure.

not even close. Expierenced plenty of bad with it, more so with one kid. Seen plenty of parents that are ate up with trying to outdo other parents. Seen plenty of parents get crazy with it.

I just am good at keep a perspective and letting my kids choose. I played in HS and know what it takes now a days to compete, but i let them decide if they want to or not. I encourage them to work hard no matter what.

But we keep things very very much in perspective and keep pressure to a minimum. I let them ask for extra practice, I make sure grades and school have to be the #1 no matter what and letting grades slip means loss of sports....no exceptions.

Im not naive at all.
