He might be telling the truth. A lot of fraternities have a "Geek Room" during rush where they take the loser-looking guys so they don't bum out the legitimate rushes. It's usually run by the 2/3 biggest dickheads in the fraternity, and there are usually embarrassing and uncomfortable questions asked. That's referenced in Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds and it's as old as time. It's a total dick move. Everybody deserves respect. Period.

My fraternity (80's era) had a quiet group of gay guys. Who else was going to do "Songfest" ?
But will confirm-there were gays. Later, after FB-it became apparent just how gay some of them were. Back in those days there was extreme anti-gay sentiment in one sense, but also a general "don't ask don't tell" rule that was observed. They'd get sorority dates and we'd pretend they were straight. A lot of those guys were really well-respected and liked, including one fraternity President . Looking back I think we handled it correctly for the most part.

If you were in the attic you should have left. The south will rise again. Just to fight federal intrusion of course.

As a general question to those questioning admins, what would have been a more appropriate response?

Some of them take shite way too personally, especially considering they are in their 30's or 40's by now.

How are these Greeks truly being punished? They can't have a social for the time being?
Its part of the college experience, something you typically can do only once, and it is being taken away from them. I imagine it is more than just taken away, there are traditions around these socials to reward seniors. So in their senior years, they are missing out.
Comparison of the absurdity:
Someone gets in the student section super drunk and continues drinking from smuggled booze. He dies of alcohol poisoning.
Administration responds with banning of the student section and selling of those tickets to the general market. Individual students aren't banned from the games, but an officially designated section is no longer present. Hell, lets even marginalize it to a single season while they "reevaluate their protocols and policies."
You would be up in that thread saying "How are students truly being punished?"

Right dumbass it's boomers?
It wouldn't be the easily-offended pussy arse SJW millenials who want "equality" and "inclusiveness" for everyone, that are offended by groups who project exclusivity and superiority, right? You know, the fragile type that see a cable in a tree and scream racism.
The whole anti Greek movement has been in full force since the 90s. Gee who was educated/indoctrinated in that period? And it's gotten worse in the last ten years. They're using lawyers as a means to an end.
Blame the outcasts who resent not getting a bid, not the system they are using to destroy Greek orgs.

Insurance is the big issue, but any chapter with history and money will consider going independent. And why not? It makes their life easier. They gain little from school approval.
The danger for the university is that - ban backfires. The chapters do go private and they have no control over their activities.

It's common sense to think someone that's hates a club so much, even decades later, that they secretly wanted to be in but were cut.
Why the hate for a group of people who chose a different path?

It's pretty sad. And makes the frat stereotype even worse
Posted on 9/14/17 at 9:16 pm to tigerinthebueche
The culture has gotten very anti-elitist, no matter that most Greeks are very middle class, in every sense of the word.
As such, any institution that celebrates the idea of elitism is a ready target.

I pledged in 2000 and if you saw me you'd never guess I was in a fraternity. I definitely do not fit the stereotype. I was amazed at the resentment by so called GDI's towards fraternities. I'd often ask what they did to them with no real concrete answers. They look at the Greek community as being exclusive to them and thus it should be hated and removed. I

One of my brothers best friends died in 2003

All kidding aside, these kids come from "better off families". Which would lead one to believe they would have better sense than taking something to an extreme that leads to death.

There are so many frats on campuses that it is pretty hard for someone to try and join a frat and not get a bid. Not very exclusive.
Posted on 9/14/17 at 9:21 pm to BayouBengals03
That's a bunch of fricking bullshite unless there's some indication that all fraternities and sororities were involved in this kids death.

People here are acting like he banned all Greeks forever. What he did as listed above is the correct move today.

Alexander said the university had suspended "all Greek activities" pending the outcome of the LSU police investigation of Gruver's death.
