You: I've been all over town and there's no help wanted signs out.

Me: Posts links to two companies you mentioned with a bunch of openings.

You: Well, yeah, that's normal for them to have openings (completely oblivious to the fact that you just confirmed that you were wrong with your initial statement)

The claim was they had them at their stores. The 2 Publix locations by my house, and the 2 by my office don't have signs in their windows saying they're hiring, and the link you provided didn't list any jobs at any of those 4 locations.

So where was I wrong? I can give you those 4 locations if you want to drive out to them to confirm.

It’s beyond pathetic. I was in south Alabama this weekend and the short staffing was everywhere.
One gas station that I stopped by was at least trying with-
$12 hour minimum
$360 possible bonus every two weeks
Vacation, medical, 401k, free uniforms, and half priced food.
LOL

Maybe 2 or 3 times, but never at a CFA.

Are you being intentionally dense? Or is your position that there are no companies with employee shortages, because help wanted signs are the only way to find employees and you didn't see any?

And never mind the fact that "Alabama employee shortage" brings up a ton of stories that speak to the problem.

Here's one: Small businesses struggle with record worker shortage

They are going to really disappointed when the labor shortage continues after ending the extra benefits, though I think end of June is a good time to stop the extra unemployment benefits
June is way too late. It should have been stopped a long time ago

Here is the post I responded that started this conversation.

I would say that almost every business (especially restaurants) have help wanted signs up.

I responded that I haven't seen that around Birmingham, if we're using the "almost every business" qualifier. I was called a liar, so I listed businesses around Birmingham I've been to that didn't have Help Wanted signs up when I visited them. Of course I've seen several businesses with them up, but not nearly every business. And that certainly doesn't mean they're not hiring if they don't have signs up.

I've never denied some places are having difficulty finding people to hire.

I haven't been in hiding. The weather has been really nice here recently and we prefer to sit outside when the weather is nice.

So all these pages to finally come to the conclusion you are unqualified to discuss this topic because you do not go anywhere it would apply. Cool

What complete nonsense. If they are working and end up starving it is because they are living well beyond their means

Why exactly do you think they can't get employees?

They’re not paying enough.

It’s a bullshite answer but it’s an answer.

That absurdity reminds me of National Lampoon's...

"In seven years, he couldn't find a job?"

"Catherine said he's been holding out for a managerial position."

I have a few theories, but wouldn't say I definitely think any of them are the primary cause.

- In restaurant and retail, I wonder lot of people have decided they no longer want to work in those industries and have found other jobs, or gone back to school to pursue another field. Some are also probably using the UI as a crutch to find something else.

- In some retail jobs, I wonder how many of those workers that were close to retirement age are opting to stay retired. I know the Lowe's by house employed at least a few older workers that looked near retirement age.

- While this one is not much of a concern anymore, I do think for several months the uncertainty with schools and childcare prevented some people from er-entering the workforce. My kids' schools are still doing a 10-day quarantine for any student exposed in close proximity to someone that tests positive. That's a big burden on parents if they don't have alternate arrangements because there's never much warning when that happens, but again that concern is not where it was 2 or 3 months ago.

- I do think pay is part of it. For a board that loves to tout free market, it sure seems to abandon it when the bargaining power is with workers. Certainly that bargaining power is propped up with temporary government assistance, but it's still there.

- For married couples, I would guess there are some that realized they can make ends meet on just one salary while also having more family time, so the wife picking up a few shifts at the local retail store has decided not to return to it.

- And it's also possible supply just hasn't caught up with demand yet, though that was probably more a problem 3 or 4 weeks ago then right now.

- We've also lost over 600,000 people to the virus. How many of those were working? While they may not be in heavier impacted industries, perhaps someone from those industries replaced them.

- Has there been a lot of people moving out of the cities to rural areas? Are current housing costs preventing them from moving back to the city where a large number of these jobs are?

Just some spitballed thoughts on it.

While your logics are reasonable, we still have 98% of the population that survived the virus and are being lazy pieces of shite sucking off the government tit.
