I mean this doesn't matter. Ezekiel Elliott is 225 lbs. He's obese according to BMI. That guy shouldn't be an issue on a flight at all

The plane doesn't care if you are 225 lbs of muscle or fat.... its weight.

Charging overweight passenger makes sense. No reason I should pay extra for an overweight bag and the lady that weighs 80 pounds more than me doesn’t get charged more.

It should all be considered. All of it. Your weight, bags, weight...

If only they could charge people by the pound.

Right, but you can't kick a guy off for being 225 and 6% body fat.

The point is to find obese people and get rid of them, not athletes

Athletes are a weight burden.

This is about over-grossing the aircraft. 225lbs is 225 lbs no matter the fat%. Trust me... the airplane doesn't care.

If you want to argue charging more for a lardass taking up 2 seats... fine... i agree.... but i don't think you realize how 'finicky' weight can be on an airplane.

That would be the fairest method. Set a total weight limit all in. Weigh more, then your baggage allowance should reduce proportionately.

How about measuring the person's girth. If you are over the limit, you have to buy the seat next to you.

Because girth alone doesn't effect fuel use, weight does.

Clearly you aren’t getting it.

Airplane go fly
Lift must exceed weight
More weight mean more lift required
More lift required mean more drag and more thrust required
Dat mean more fuel burn
Dat mean cost more

In summation
More weight bad
Less weight good

I think a height/ weight ratio would be fair. It adjusts for height, which people can't control, but considers weight, which people can control.

I’ve been on a fairly empty 737 and they had to shift us around.

Same here on an 800 from MSY-DAL. Passenger weight is one thing but what about the weight of all of the carry-on stuff? Should that number be included in the calculation?

So they assume an average weight of X per passenger.

Why not just increase X by 10 percent or 20 percent or whatever and move on with life.

If the plane is overloaded, then they will know that ahead of time, and can adjust cargo accordingly. Or, limit the number of seats sold.

Weighing people seems pretty silly to me.

I booked a zipline excursion in Colorado the other day, gal on the line asked if everyone in my party was 250 or less. After I quit laughing I said yes, both my wife and I weigh less than 250 pounds. I asked her if fattys were a big issue for them and she said “you have no idea” LOL

weight is weight.
weight sensitive equipment requires weight monitoring

they can’t let Andre the giant on a zipline and he wasn’t fat at all

Several years ago the FAA (and i believe the ntsb) got on an airline for 'over filling' their drinks and snack compartments. Was so extreme that they had to weigh EVERYTHING including the cardboard that held the drinks. FAA would audit the flights and if the flight had even 1 drink over it was fined.

Sometimes (most of the time) the ramp/ground crew can't begin to start loading the aircraft until everyone is seated/zoned.

Clearly I understand what is happening here. You try to kick off a guy who is 225 lbs and is in the crossfit games and see what happens. That airline will be in decade of litigation it will lose.

You can say weight is weight all you want, but this is a measure to stop obesity not lifting weights. You have to look at unintended consequences if you try and put something like this into practice. All you people saying "weight is weight" and that's the end probably aren't dealing with attorneys on a daily basis who will just crush these airlines if they ever try this
