You do realize that the majority of your ancestors wanted nothing to do with the Confederacy, right? Sure there were Cajuns that joined the effort, and even a very few that owned slaves, but for the most part our Acadian ancestors wanted nothing to do with it. If your heritage is derived from Nova Scotia as all Acadians (Cajuns) are, you have no business flying the confederate flag. We are coonasses. We are not rednecks. We are a peaceful people that do not support racism. We were exiled from our native land similar to the Indians and Mexicans so we have more in common with them than we do with those redneck morons from Alabama. These are facts. Read a book. Stop perpetuating the coonass/redneck ignorance. We are of a completely different heritage.

Did you know that Coach Charley Mac played for Bear Bryant when Bryant was the Head Coach at the University of Kentucky?

Well....90% of the south wasn't involved in slavery.

Most of the soldiers in the confederate army was fighting to defend themselves against the union army.

You have no business telling other people what they should do.

As far as it goes though, if Cajuns have adopted the Confederate flag, I assume it’s because they feel under attack.

They weren't fans. While Louisiana as a whole was staunchly pro-Confederate, a couple Confederate draft agents who wandered into the swamp looking for conscripts ended up gator bait instead. There are numerous stories about Cajuns who were forced into the Confederate army who deserted en masse at the first opportunity, including an entire unit that ran off without firing a shot at the Battle of Labiedville in 1862. Unfortunately, it's difficult to sort out what actually happened, and what was Union propaganda.

Despite their obvious dislike of the Confederacy, Union recruiters found that they would fare no better with the Cajun population. Townspeople would doctor records so as to avoid the draft or just escape to the "no man's land" between the Union and Confederate armies. With their intimate knowledge of the swamps, Cajuns were able to elude conscription agents from both sides. There they joined up with Jayhawker bands that identified with neither the Union or the Confederacy and "fought against oppressive policies regardless of who tried to sustain the measures."

In the end, Cajuns identified more with their community than they did with their state, and certainly more so than the Confederacy or the Union. They would actively fight against both North and South, but were especially effective in battling Confederate conscription efforts in the areas on the edges of Confederate control. The most telling aspect of their feelings on the war is the legacy they passed down to their children. As late as the 1970's, Cajun descendants referred to the Civil War as "la guerre des Confederes;" or the Confederate's War.

Also, all that BS about the south being built by slaves? North burnt it all down. 95% of the south had to be rebuilt by whites who had already built it in the first place anyways.

Coonasses use racial epithets against black folk in their everyday vernacular just as much as anyone else in the South.

So, are you talking about being exiled from Nova Scotia? Or exiled from your land in Europe that sent you to Nova Scotia in the first place?

Now I'm genuinely confused.

There are at least twenty artillery, cavalry and infantry batteries, battalions and regiments that were nearly completely made up of Acadians.
