Absurdism and The Myth of Sisyphus
Posted by UndercoverBryologist on 4/22/21 at 9:55 pm231
If you are doomed to rolling the boulder up the hill for eternity only for it to fall back down the hill and you have to start back over, is there still room for happiness?
Albert Camus presents Sisyphus's ceaseless and pointless toil as a metaphor for modern lives spent working at futile jobs in factories and offices. "The workman of today works every day in his life at the same tasks, and this fate is no less absurd. But it is tragic only at the rare moments when it becomes conscious."
Camus claims that when Sisyphus acknowledges the futility of his task and the certainty of his fate, he is freed to realize the absurdity of his situation and to reach a state of contented acceptance.

It is no myth. I think it killed Al Capone.

There's honor and dignity in fighting, even if it's hopeless.
I'll settle for that.

If you use a rubber, you won’t get Sisyphus.

Camus changed my life. His philosophy is my ‘religion’.

The only thing tragic about this scenario is Camus' analogy which presupposes the task itself to be a purposeless one. Most of the simplest and best people I've ever known selflessly rolled the rock up the hill day after day because at some point their life had become less about them and more about the responsibility of taking care of others. That menial task put bread on the table and instilled purpose in a life otherwise full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
So yes, if your life is spent looking inward for purpose, Sisyphus seems like an appropriate analogy. If you view the daily grind as a necessary sacrifice to serve your loved ones and better their future, it is the grandest and best of tasks.

This is such a load of bullshite. The people bitching about their air conditioned 9-5 need to spend a year farming and see how that goes. We have never had more free time and comparative ease of labor unless you want to go all the way back to hunter/gatherer days and a life expectancy of 25. If your 40 hours per week are so miserable, find a better way to use the other 128 hours.

They have more fulfilling careers out there I can choose to do. However..... they don’t pay jack.
My job pays for the things I like to do when I am not working.

Is Demian the one that turned you into an arrogant dick?
You remind me of the arrogant academic in Good Will Hunting - the one Matt Damon told, “How do you like them apples?”
