In it, a Confederate veteran shows a Boy Scout trooper around the veterans' encampment. Just speculating, but it's very likely the boy would go on to serve his country in either World War II or Korea and, if still alive today, would be around the same age as the Confederate veteran showing him around. Which really makes you think about how young this nation really is. We still have men and women alive today who walked and talked with veterans of the American Civil War - who themselves walked and talked with veterans of the Revolutionary War in their youths.

There are people alive now who knew Civil War veterans. There were people alive then who knew Revolutionary War veterans.

75th anniversary of Gettysburg would have been 1938. WWII ended in 1945. I don’t think it’s that likely

The last Revolutionary War veteran died in 1869. The last CW veteran died in 1956. QED.

On my mother's side, I have two aunts still living, the oldest was a toddler when her great-grandfather died in 1936...he joined the CSA at 16 and was taken prisoner outside of Atlanta at 18. He walked home to Algiers from the repatriation hospital in Richmond in 1865.

a few years back, I spoke at the Warrant Officer Candidate School graduation where one of my cousins got his WO1 bar...talked to them about the institutional memory of the Army and how they were a critical part of it...as a young soldier, I served with the last of the WW2 veterans, as a 2LT with a Warrant Officer who served in Korea...

some day, some youngster will talk about meeting some crusty old retired colonel who served in Saudi Arabia and was in the Pentagon when the airplane hit...

Math checks out.

Let’s say you served in the Civil War in 1865 at 15 years old (there were records of kids under 10 fighting). That means you were born in 1850. Let’s say you lived until you were well into your 80s that puts you in the 1930s. Let’s say you had a descendant or family friend or neighbor kid that was born in the late 20s/early 30s. Let’s use 1930 for round math. That kid would turn 91 this year.

A 13 year old would have been 18 in 1943.
