Was or is scoliosis a legitimate widespread problem for kids then or old wives tale turned medical hoax?

Wife and I were wondering about the condition apparently so serious that every grade school student was personally examined for it, exposing their bare backs for the checkup. I see from the Webz that it’s a “very common” thing but I’ve never known anyone that has it.

I've knew several in high school and college. One girl in particular that had uneven shoulders.

I have scoliosis. What do you want to know

ETA. 28% curvature the last time I had a doctor check my SR year of high school. Its part of the reason why I work out.

My grandma had it, didn’t keep herself up, and had back surgery. Been in a wheel chair ever since

Wished they had mri back then. Took 50 years to find out I was born with a narrow spinal canal. Same thing that cooper Manning and Michael Irvin had.

I don’t think it was common but it wasn’t rare either.Friend of mine was diagnosed with it due to persistent back pain.It wasn’t obvious looking at her.

Scoliosis exams

Is that still a thing in schools? Every damn year we had to line up in the gym, take our shirts off, and let the nurse eyeball us. I'm scarred by it, I tell you.

They did scoliosis exams at my middle school. My friend didn't return to class like everyone else after the exam, so we thought something was wrong. He didn't have the scoliosis, but they discovered one if his hips was slightly larger than the other causing him to fail the exam. Word got out that he was different. He got beat up every day during and after school for several months. This is what scoliosis exams causes: bullying.

All Aggie male students still undergo it. They make the guys remove their pants to conduct a more thorough examination.

I know a chick that had it.

She had a 35 deg curve in here spine.

She had surgery to correct it and was like 2-3 inches taller after.

Still fairly common though Im not sure what to do to prevent it.

My son developed it in his mid teens. Terrible S curve. With his shirt off We noticed one hip was higher than the other. Had 2 rods inserted in his back to straighten it as much as possible. Thats been 7 years ago and he’s been fine since. Also a bit taller.

Very common. I work in diagnostic imaging sales and scoliosis studies are a must have with all new imaging equipment
