The great May 3rd flood... Started raining in the morning when we got to school, and it didn't stop. I remember the teachers were talking after lunch and they let us out early because it started to flood in Bucktown.

I was in 8th grade at St Louis King of France. Had to walk home from school along the W Esplanade canal in waist deep water...

Good times...

I think my parents had just started dating around then

That’s crazy - in today’s world they would’ve cancelled school 2 days before that morning. And even with those preventative measures, they’d still be panicking more than 43 years ago. Kids today probably wouldn’t even be allowed to walk in the rain.

The May 8th 1995 flood was really bad too. I remember as a kid dragging my neighbor's canoe a few blocks over and being able to paddle all over. We had fun with it.

I miss the smell of K&B. IDK why the K&B here in Thibodaux smelt different than other drug stores, but it had a cool smell.

I was ten and they sent us home early, and I rode the bus. The bus got to a certain point and the driver said it was getting too deep for the bus so we would have to walk the rest of the way. He opened the door and I remember the water being at the second step. A bus full of kids get out in waist deep water and go their separate ways. We were several blocks from the house. Great times and nothing was said.

If that happened today, he would be canceled, fired, and sued along with the school board.

The one in May 1995 might’ve been worse.

Don't remember those. Do remember the gallon size. My mother saved those damn empty containers to put leftovers in. Had them jammed into the kitchen pantry..
