Who coined the term “ding dong ditch” and how long have people been calling it that?
After this incident maybe it should now be called Trigger Knocking to deter would-be participants.

There's some major factors that will need to be investigated here. If someone is ringing my doorbell, then beating on the door and doing some other shite, I'm getting the pistol out and there's a chance I'm squeezing the trigger.
But if he rang the doorbell one time and then ran off, and the homeowner ran out the house blasting - That's murder. It's not too hard to differentiate.

Commonly referred to as “ding dong ditching,”
Is it really though?

No, of course not. It’s just become common to hear about older kids kicking a front door hard as they can in the middle of the night. Not the innocent prank of old. This doesn’t sound like that situation tho

The homeowner needed to hear the doorbell, walk to the door, open the door see you running, then go get a gun, come back to the front door and then shoot. He would have at least 20 second head start.
After 8pm I always answer the door with a Glock in my hand.
People that know me, understand.
People that don't know me, shouldn't knock on my door after 8pm.

Yes, it has. We all know you live in your own warped reality so don’t worry about it.

Geez homeowner, at least shoot the leg if you have to be a psychopath about a prank.

No, it's rural Alabama, and the cops are 20 minutes away at best.
Noone should come to your house unexpected after dark.

These kids and these stupid social media stunts.

its “ring and run” or simply “knocker” from where I hail from.
We stepped it up a notch with fishing line, a rock and some tape. One guy answered the door and we knocked again using the fishing line maybe 2 seconds after he closed the door lol. He opened the door to look around but didnt step outside. The third time he flew out the door and I quickly realized the flaw in this method. The fishing line leads straight to your hiding spot. Ran like a bat out of hell.
We did have a guy walk out to the street with a handgun once. We were hidden in some neighbors bushes and I was able to take off running because he walked the opposite direction of where I was hiding. Definite mental note to stay away from that house. I cant fathom opening fire on kids running away while playing knocker.

If you're that concerned over your safety, why answer the door at all?

How do you shoot at someone who rang a doorbell and is likely running away? Especially a child.
If they rang the doorbell and were running they might have needed help quickly (unlikely, but it's still another possibility.) And then the most likely scenario is a young person doing some silly prank which is still not worth shooting them over.
There is a lady on my local Nextdoor App who a young kid did this to and she put his pic on there asking if anyone knew him and could tell him to stop. That seems more appropriate if this bothers you.

Emergencies do happen sometimes and a neighbor might need help and doesn't have the ability to call on the phone.
I'm not drawing down on anyone, I just have it in my hand.
I think most of my neighbors do the same thing.
