Louisiana residents living in 337 and 504 area codes will soon have to dial 10 digits when making all phone calls.

Eighty-two area codes around the country are transitioning to 10-digit dialing as the Federal Communications Commission prepares to enable 988 to be used to reach the Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Two of the affected area codes in Louisiana will be the 337 area code for Southwest Louisiana and 504 for New Orleans.

The reason for the change to 10-digit dialing these areas is because some numbers in those area codes use 988 as the first three digits in their phone numbers.

The FCC says the change to 10-digit dialing will begin on April 24, 2021. However, for a few months, calls made with only 7 digits will continue to go through.

But those calls will stop going through on Oct. 24, 2021, and only calls made using 10 digits will be completed.

The 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is expected to be put into place on July 16, 2022.

I wonder how many 988 numbers there are in the 504? Would it have been easier to just issue them new phone numbers?

Imagine the confusion for people who have just the 7 digits saved in their phones and only use the number every few years.

In the age of cell phones, all numbers are saved as 10 digit, right?

So many people have non local area codes.

Is this really a big issue?

My wife told me this the other day, my response was, "who doesn't dial 10 digits when calling someone?"

I couldn't tell you the last time I only dialed 7 digits, maybe 10+ years ago when I still lived with my parents and we had a land line.

Or maybe use a different number for the suicide hotline.

I have an out of state number, so I have always had to use ten digit dialing anyway.

We don't already have this?

Christ I remember my parents telling me I had to start doing this 20 years ago in Virginia.

Not if you have them manually saved. Also, some folks still have a land line. You will have to dial in the 1337

Everything in my cell phone is pretty much 10 digits.

But my work desk phone, when calling local clients, I would often use 7 digits

I don’t want to live in a world where 2 Live Crew lyrics have become obsolete. :(

Picked up the telephone, then dialed the 7 digits
Said, "Yo, this Marquis, baby! Are you down with it?"
I arrived at her house, knocked on the door Not having no idea of what the night had in store
I'm like a dog in heat, a freak without warning
I have an appetite for sex, 'cause me so horny

Can't they just use 555? That way anyone who watches any movie ever will know that number. I don't think I have ever heard a real phone number start with those 3 numbers.
