Said McCoy is much stronger and much better anchor and that’ll help him at guard as he’s expected to block more 1 on 1. Centers always have help or helping Guard

quote:

as a passblocker Ruiz has no holes and is even better at passblocking and reach blocking than McCoy but he lacks the physicality in run game. As part of a combo he can do the job but McCoy is able to move guys and that’ll help him at G

I’ve been saying I think McCoy will stay at C and Ruiz will move to G but perhaps I’m wrong. Ruiz is pretty damn young even for a rookie and I think will develop after a season under his belt as a good mauler on the Oline. He still has some room to grow, maybe not much, but some, and will get stronger. IIRC, he’s only 20.

It shouldn't be understated the importance of protection calls though. McCoy has a year jump of settling in.

Not saying Ruiz won't get there, but for year 1 while he settles in it may be better for him to play guard so he can focus more on assignment and fundamentals instead of also needing to think about line calls.

But maybe he picks it up super quick and it'll be a non issue. Payton raved about his football iq. Just saying don't underrate that aspect.

That’s been my issue. Unger and I’ve heard Brees say it, C for the Saints is one of the more difficult teams in the league with the amount of calls he has to make.

Ugh, playing C for the Saints is one of the more difficult teams to play C for is what I’m trying to say

I’m sure in training camp they’ll rotate and see what combo is the best

if this were last year and the saints were at dire need at C he's start at C. Don't need to do that this year and especially with a lack of reps in minicamps and such i think he starts a G and maybe moves next year to C

Ruiz made all the calls at Michigan. He also wasn’t very good at guard, and he doesn’t want to play there. Don’t think we see him at guard unless it’s due to an emergency year one

Yeah meant to put that in my post too. They won't have nearly as much time for him to practice the calls and such this year specifically.

And also as said C for us is harder than for most teams with the calls they need to make.

His OL coach said he’s one of the smartest people he’s ever been around

That's the flipside of the coin and I guess it depends on how similar the calls and defensive looks he sees will be.

Like I said Payton did rave about his football iq. But it's not like we have to worry about it. Both guys will be solid no matter where they play this year and going forward. I trust, as Wicked said, they do their job in finding the right combo for this year.

Both are well below the median size for guards. Only thing that worries me. One of them will have to do it

Saints have done such a phenomenal job at beefing up both their lines the last 4-5 years. Especially on the interior of both lines. I mean even guys like Malcom Brown are huge additions, Hendrickson, Tom, etc

Only way I really see Warford staying is if the offseason gets cut EXTREMELY short and maybe a preseason game or 2 gets cut. Then they may want to lean into continuity for this year.

Payton definitely sounded down when asked about Warford, "He's going to have to compete." But also the tone he used while saying it.

Mccoy is the same size as Zack Martin fwiw

He could probably stand to gain 5-10 lbs if he does move

I don’t think weight will be hard to put on

McCoy is a 4.8 guy, I think they want him swinging out and getting in front on those screens like Evans and Nicks used to do

Ruiz played almost 90% of his snaps at center. You can tell he doesn’t want to play guard based on his interviews

Marshal Yanda is 6’3 315

Kevin Zeitler is 6’4 315

Zack Martin is 6’4 309

McCoy is 6’4 305. There are bigger guards for sure but there are guys McCoy’s size

I’d be cool if he took a pay cut. If the way it falls and Warford is a backup G, you couldn’t ask for much better backup at G than that. I’d hate to pay 8M though for a backup. Even 4-5M would be too much but I’d take that. Assuming that if nobody wants to trade for him

McCoy would be fine at guard. Great height for it (6'4"-6'5" is ideal) and can add 10-15 lbs. if need be. 315-320 lbs. is fine for a guard.

Not much incentive to take a pay cut. He could likely cash in pretty decently if he just gets cut and signs elsewhere as a starter. Even a 1-2 year deal paying him $6-8 mil per would be better than accepting a cut to $4 mil for 1 year.
