I believe it has to be! Really makes me wonder about this team moving forward. I get that we were down a bunch of guys and coaches etc… but that was beyond awful. We never even had a chance of moving the ball. Even in ugly performances from years past, we usually had a handful of turnover but still were able to move the ball a little. Today we couldn’t do anything!

I worry about Winston moving forward also. We can’t rely on him to win any games Throwing it a number of times. If we can’t control the line of scrimmage offensively I’m afraid we’ll see many more of these games.

The loss doesn’t bother me as much as the way we lost, we got completely dominated! As bad an offensive performance I’ve seen since Payton has been here!

No, they’ve had worse outings without the injury issues. 2018
Cowboys game comes to mind in terms of shitty offensive performances.

No bc they still played good defense after losing half the starters. I’ve seen their D collapse before with the guy currently collapsing KCs defense.

Offensively possibly, D played respectable given the situation and special teams played well. We’ve had some piss poor offensive performances over the years though, we just tended to forget about them.

Worst performance offensively, sure. But worst overall? I don’t think so. We as fans suffer from recency bias. We lost to a 3-5 Washington team by 33 in 2015. Panthers were 3-8-1 when they beat us by 31 in 2014. 31 to Indy in 2007.

2011 Saints/Rams comes to mind. Didn't score an offensive point until 10:00 to go in the 4th. Brees threw a pick 6. Brees threw a TD with 6 seconds left in the game to make the score look respectable (31-21) but trust me, it was an arse kicking and a miserable game to watch.

While on the surface if you just look at the box scores, this Panthers game was worse, but the reason the Rams game made me mad so mad and will probably never leave my head is because that was the 2011 Saints (arguably the most talented and explosive offense in the Payton/Brees era) and that Rams team was garbage (went 2-14, only wins were against us and the 4-12 Browns). There was no explainable reason for our offense to look that pathetic against a sorry squad like that. Put a sour note on an otherwise fun Voodoo Fest weekend.

This

I was at the '79 MNF loss to the Raiders.

And the NOLA Big Ben loss to ATL.

Among other abysmal Saints losses.

Are all you people really this dumb? I guess you think all those coaches on the payroll just sit around and play cards all week. You take away the coaching staff and expect the players to still be able to compete at the professional level against a team with all its coaches supporting the players and game plan?
My educated guess is that Payton made a decision that as soon as it was obvious they could not compete then the game plan was to not get anyone injured. Take the L and move on.

The explanation is simple. We could not block Robert Quinn that game. He was a one man wrecking crew that game. Chris Long was a problem too with 3 sacks but Quinn is the one who made the bigger plays. (Directly caused 2 turnovers)

quote:

The Saints, down 24-3 at that point, were trying to get back into the game with a third-and-17 play at the St. Louis 37-yard line. Quinn rushed quarterback Drew Brees from his right end position and was immediately chipped by tight end Jimmy Graham. Then left tackle Charles Brown and left guard Ben Grubbs teamed to knock Quinn to the ground. They probably thought the play was over, but Quinn crawled for about 2 yards, got up and strip-sacked Brees, all in just 2.71 seconds. Quinn capped it off by recovering the fumble.

quote:

Quinn did it all in this game for the Saints. He had a solo sack to thwart a third-and-1 play, drew a holding penalty, hurried Brees nine times and his quarterback hit on the first series forced an interception, which the Rams turned into a lead they would not relinquish. The 7.75 Pressure Points Quinn accumulated against the Saints was the second-highest total for any player this season, and earned him his second edge rusher of the week award.

Offensively it was really bad. Sooner or Later, like it or not, Payton will have to take the Handcuffs off of Winston and let him throw the ball more than 15-20 times a game!
