re: Will you be shocked if we draft a qb after the 2nd round?

wrong this years draft is deep at QB in the later rounds. Next years may not be as deep
Any evidence to back up the claim that it won't be deep next year?
It's probably a moot point because we won't draft one this year or next year.

The second is you let him learn under Brees for 2 years and then trade or cut Brees.
That does sound "crazy", but it has happened before and has happened to some of the greatest QBs to ever play the game (Unitas, Montana, Archie and Peyton Manning, Warren Moon,Kenny Stabler, Jim Plunkett...just to name a few).
However, Brees is more than a QB here in New Orleans...he's an icon in a place that doesn't have many icons. He, more so than anyone, brought the spirit of winning and overcoming extreme adversity to the city. Unless he makes some asinine demands, he's here for the duration.

Though as an LSU fan it pains me to say it, but picking up and developing AJ might prove smart down the road. I mean, Yeah there's other holes that need to be addressed but I wouldn't be totally shocked.

If McCarron, Murray, Carr, Garoppolo or Mettenberger are there in the 3rd, does Payton go after them?
I'd be OK with it. That's a very good group of QB's for the mid rounds and if they develop into good NFL QB's, they can be traded for a better pick or other players in the future.

Brees is 35 (turned 35 in january)
he has 3 more years on his contract
2014 = 35
2015 = 36
2016 = 37
i suspect we will sign him to a 2 year deal for his 38th and 39th years on planet earth... win a super bowl in either 2016, 2017, 2018 he is retiring
we arent drafting a qb IMO this season. we are ALL in this season. a backup isnt gonna help THIS year. now next draft is where we start looking into a top 3 round QB.

If they selected anything other than a 5th or 6th Rd project type of QB (potential but not NFL starting ready) it would likely be for overwhelming value. In that case it could be surprising but not shocking.
At #58 Derek Carr could be a cannot pass on player
At #91 or #126 Garropolo, McCarron or Mett might be that grade
The further down the board you go the more fluid the ratings become. 5th or 6th Rd Murray, Brett Smith, Fales, or Boyd might present a value option.
That said, I think the Byrd signing announced 'We're all in to win NOW'. We're all in with Brees and not looking for anyone else in that spot- unless it was a pure cannot pass on value guy.

This alone baffles me why anyone would even think about mocking a QB to us. Besides what you already said above, it's clear Griffin is that project developmental guy right now. We didn't carry him on the 53 all last year for no reason.

But based on what Payton said they are ALWAYS evaluating guys and trying to find that next Drew Brees. Those guys don' come every draft so if they feel they have one sitting in their lap they are going to take him.
This is where common sense splits down two paths that are both extremely logical.
One path says wait 2 more years and try to get a replacement. The money adds up because you'll have a guy playing maybe 2-3 years on peanuts after Brees goes.
The other path says if you feel the next Brees is sitting there you take him despite it being too early. The value is just too great and you can always trade one guy or the other and get greater value in return.
As for the all in comments, that's not completely true. We are actually all in now AND in the future. We are set up extremely well for future years and Payton said as long as he is coach he is going to keep the window slammed open.
In short, Payton ALWAYS wants to win now so we do what we can to make that work, but we also keep the future in mind(which is why we go BPA within reason in the draft and structure contracts with flexibility in the future in mind).

Anyone think Teddy Bridgewater could be possible at #27? I actually think he could take an Aaron Rodgers like tumble. Remember 2005? Right up to the draft most had Alex Smith and Rodgers neck n neck as the top QB. Smith went #1 but Rodgers was passed over until #24. Green Bay had no QB need. Farve was 35 (like Brees). They had just come off 4 straight playoff years with 44 wins. It was just too much value for them to pass up.
Look at the QB needy teams and it's easy to see only 2 or 3 taken before #27. Bortles, Manziel I think surely go before him. #3 could be Carr as easily as Bridgewater. Interdasting but don't expect it even if he was myself.
