We have had some decent drafts in the past. But i do believe this has been the best saints draft so far. Only time can tell but the production we have gotten from our picks says a lot. We won the cooks trade just like we won the graham trade. People like to get down on Payton but the biggest thing that set the saints back was the ridiculous penalties from the bounty scandal.

Since 2006, which is his best.

If the anal zone can somehow stay somewhat healthy throughout his career it will be damn near a perfect draft

Agreed. The biggest surprise is Ramczyk ability to play damn near anywhere on the line as a rookie.

Does this draft have the likes of:

The original Kamara
A 10 year NFL starter and multiple Pro Bowl safety
A HOF-caliber guard
The Saints all-time leading receiver
A 12-season offensive lineman and multiple-year starter at RT

PLUS trading picks for Jeff Faine and Hollis Thomas

PLUS a long-time D/ST contributor for the Patriots

That's hard to beat.

Got a long way to go to find out if they'll be better than the '06 class.

Yeah you got three legitimate Saints HOF players. One borderline NFL HOF player, and the most hyped player I have ever seen come out of college that single handedly won us a Playoff game our superbowl year.

So no I don't think you are topping 2006

Wayyyyy too soon to tell. But when you look at how many of the picks are contributing, it’s an amazing class thus far. I mean, we are relevant again because the draft class has been so good.

Very good class, but has a long way to go before it catches up with the ‘06 class.

2006 draft was pretty stacked, just counting who we drafted:
Bush - top 5 weapon, pro-bowl caliber
Harper - top 15 safety, pro-bowl caliber
Evans - top 5 guard, HOF-caliber
Colston - top 10 WR, pro-bowl caliber
Strief - top 5 RT, pro-bowl caliber
Not used: Ninkovich - top 20 DE
6 legitimate 10+ year players

For this draft to come close, we need:
Lattimore, Ramcyzk, Williams, Kamara to be top 10 players for a decade

Then we still need 2 of Hendrickson, Anzalone, and Muhammad to be contributors for 10+ years

that 2006 draft is really hard to beat.

"If its a poor draft we must give all the blame to Loomis only as the buck stops with him period. However...if and I say if its a great draft or the best draft we have ever had then its obvious that CSP made it that way despite the best efforts of Loomis to sabotage the whole thing."

I've never really blamed Loomis for the bad drafting seeing as how I'm pretty positive he has little to no say in who gets drafted. He's always been an numbers and management guy not a player personnel guy. That said I fully give him blame for the enormously shitty contracts this team keeps getting straddled with

If Payton picks the players in the draft and FA, then why is Loomis to blame for signing the guys Payton wants?

He has made the contracts work the best way he could, especially considering we went all in EVERY year for a decade straight. That's hard to sustain when you start missing in the draft and free agency, which again would seemingly fall on Payton.

But honestly the biggest reason for the turnaround has been Ireland coming in and basically pulling lead on who we should draft and sign. I know Payton still has a big say, especially on the offensive side, but you can tell something changed when Ireland came in.

Very smart move by Payton and Loomis to get an actual personnel guy to run that side.

Certainly a possibility. What I always have wanted to know is how does the process work?
If CSP wants a guy and Loomis says "this is the cost short term and long" does that change things for CSP?
Or does CSP say "whatever it takes" and walks away?
Or are they a team with a big board of players and their contracts and they both have a say mostly equal in going forward with personnel and contracts?

With Benson seemingly not very engaged I tend to think its a cooperative effort between those two and they will never throw the other under the bus.

I think until the recent over haul of scouting this was a poor department and all on Loomis. The sh!tty med staff too.

To repeat others, '06 is still way ahead. Even if this class comes close talent, and longevity, wise '06 gets a huge bump due to Super Bowl contributions.

What if the saints win a super bowl in the next three years? I guess I should have said offseason and draft. The cooks trade was a robbery. I love seeing the patriots lose a trade.

2006 is one of the best classes for any team in 2000s. 2017 has played 5 games. It looks great so far but slow down a bit.

It's worked well for both teams. Cooks is still producing top 15 numbers

So glad we didn't get Butler from the Patriots.

Just think of having Barnett (Tennessee) and Butler(trade with Pats) instead of Ramczyk and Lattimore. Not to mention the money we saved from the big contract Butler commanded.

This scenario alone was a huge win. Offensive Line and Secondary set for the next 5 years.
