Is it a waste of an 11th player for Brees to stay in the game? He just lines up outside and does nothing. Yes....I realize that there could be a trick play involving Brees one day but wouldn’t it be better to have an extra blocker or receiver instead? That’s a lot of plays with Tayson Hill as QB just to waste an 11th player for maybe one trick play in the future.

I kind of agree, I do think they're setting the league up for a TD pass to Brees at some point, but in the meantime we are wasting a spot in every Hill at QB play on a very long con.

Make someone cover Brees.

Having Brees in the huddle is the advantage of keeping him on the field. Defense can't just go jumbo to stop the coming run. Same reason we put Taysom out wide on some plays.

I think this is the right answer. If Brees comes out, that's a big signal to the opposing D and they get to substitute to fit the situation. They can't do that if both 7 and 9 are on the field because it is just as likely that Hill will be at H-Back with Brees under center.

Not only do I think we could, I think we will run a trick play off of it at some point. Probably the playoffs. Maybe even a couple...pass to Brees or even Hill to Brees to Hill or other Target throwback

Its so the defense cant substitute because they don't know which one of them will actually line up under center.

And out wide he's not a waste because they have to put a player out there to cover him so it really just turns to 10 on 10

We need to throw Bridgewater in there again with them. REALLY make the defense confused.

This. They will put Hill at TE some plays as well. If you sub Brees out late the defense is allowed to match.

It could also be to keep the helmet with the radio on the field. Yesterday in the ravens game late the starting QB went out injured and rg3 came in as the backup but since he is also used in other formations and positions he was having to go to the sideline to get every play. Nfl rules state you can only have one player with the radio in it on the field it is marked with a green sticker on the back

This is the correct answer

With the way they are lining him up off the ball; I think they are setting up a lateral pass to him. But, they want to see how teams react to it first, and to set up the tendency that nothing happens and he's a wasted player.

Need to make it look normal for him to line up wide and behind the QB while also not moving.

Announcers were pointing out yesterday that he barely moves, he's like a statue in there. I would think that if they're planning a fake at some point they would want him to actually run some kind of a route. (Of course if you do that then some DB might use it as an excuse to deck him)

What he needs to do is regularly take a few steps back, like he is getting out of the way of the play. The guy covering him ALWAYS runs away from him as soon as the ball is snapped. I can see Tayson faking a run and lateraling out to brees who has no one near him for a huge play. The Tayson run would draw everyone in like it always does and leave someone (maybe welcome back Ginn?) wide open.

because brees occupies a defender, and if they dont cover him hill tosses him the ball for a walk in touchdown.

its a pretty easy concept to grasp that, no, they arent wasting a player, they are creating confusion and opportunities for various scenarios to play out depending on what the defense does.

the only complaint i have with those plays is hill keeps 70% of the time when i think they should hand it off more to kamara on the sweep

You answered your own issue with your previous statement. Tendencies, they HAVE to make sure Kamara doesn't have the ball on those plays because he is that damn good. If they ever sleep Hill gives to him it will be a long arse run or touchdown.

It's all a setup for Drew to catch a TD pass in Super Bowl.
