I don't understand why the other safety (Von Bell?) didn't immediately sprint towards the goal line when he saw the ball thrown the other direction.

With the time it took Diggs to recover, there might have been a shot at a tackle. Yet Bell? never enters the screen.

Cause he's on the complete other of the side of the field. Football fields are wide and Diggs doesn't have lineman speed.

If you find a video where its zoomed out, you can see that Vonn Bell actually watched Diggs catch it and not run full speed towards the other side I guess assuming he steps out of bounds. By the time he realized that Diggs was gonna get a free TD, it was too late and he comes in about 5 yards away when Diggs crosses the line.

If he actually runs to the ball/Diggs when it was thrown, he catches Diggs at the 5 yard line or even before.

This is what I was thinking. Isn't that pretty fundamental? The minute the ball left Keenum's hand, he should have been in a dead sprint to try to get between Diggs and the goal line.

Bell came to a complete stop and only resumed running when it was obvious Diggs was free.

I'm not sure he could have made a play but it would have been close had he not stopped.

There was only one way to find out.

Also thought Crawley had pulled up as well before he was clipped by Williams. He could have also made a play on the ball.

I have heard this a lot today. I would love to see an aerial view of bell doggin it

Not that I want it to be true but I just would like to see for myself

They were playing three safeties deep and Bell had the middle safety position. He was just watching the sideline pass activity. As soon as the ball was in the air he should have sprinted over and been in position to assist if needed. Same for Craig Robertson who had short middle position and was within proximity to assist but slowed and watched.

The ball is out of Keenum's hand at about 0:07 on that video.

Bell was at the 30 yard line on the left hash, slowed down and watched the catch ensue. He only starts running towards Diggs at 0:10 seconds

At 0:14 seconds, Bell had slowed down for a second and is at the 10 yard line, roughly 15 yards away from Diggs.

So he covered close to 30-35 yards in about 4 seconds.

That lack of effort and awareness to just sit and watch the play is as inexcusable as a poor form tackle...those 3 seconds running towards Diggs could have meant catching him at he 10 yard line, maybe 5.

I feel like this is what's getting lost in all of this.
When you're playing zone and you see the ball go to someone else's zone, you need to haul arse over there.

CSB, but I remember instinctually doing this in UREC flag. Never watch if there's even a chance you can have an impact.

Likely attempting to get out of Williams (aka bowling ball) way.

Watching that replay, Vonn Bell should be criticized more than Williams.
As soon as he saw the ball in the air, he should have been sprinting that way to back up the play. He completely stopped failing to give him any chance to possibly make a game saving tackle on Diggs!

Damn... does anyone hold our secondary accountable????

They always make lazy plays that lead to penalties. They allow themselves to get out of position/ get beat then have to grab and pull to save the play and are ALWAYS called for the penalty.

I agree...but I also think the entire defense dogged it on that play.
Everybody standing around watching.
No pass rush.

You are right in theory. Bell should have been playing center field as the last line of defense. He should have stared his rotation to his left the second Keenum moved his head to the right and launched the pass he would have had time to get to Diggs .

Don't want to blame Crawley here but doesn't make a lot of sense why he ran up to his receiver instead of playing the ball.

Only thing I can think of is Crawley did exactly what the coaches said to do and play the receiver, not the ball
