Maybe there will be a miracle during cuts and we get a contributor or two that way, but if not just buckle up because it's going to be cray.

I'm not sure why you're so pessimistic. Last year was a total mess. We didn't really have the personnel to run what Spags wanted to do (almost the entire secondary had primarily man experience; our DE's were either more stout than quick or undersized and better suited for the 3-4), and his system was needlessly complicated, giving players multiple checks/options each play. You routinely saw confusion on the field and blown assignments. Early on, the players are saying that Rob Ryan has definitive responsibilities for each player on every play, and that will allow to players to attack instead of reacting.

I do think our defense will be improved. Our d-line looks disruptive and has been winning in the trenches so far. Our outside passrush will depend on how well they play up front.

I'm hoping the Saints do the right thing and shite can the Will Smith experiment. It's not gonna work.

Other than that, I'm fairly optimistic the changes made will give our team a chance to win every game.

I'm actually worried more about our special teams.

Let's pump the brakes here people.

Saints ILB Jonathan Vilma is undergoing a knee scope Thursday and is out for the rest of the preseason.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Vilma "should" be back when the Saints host the Falcons in Week 1. Still, New Orleans' defense has been ravaged by injuries this preseason. Top pass rusher Victor Butler (ACL) and run-stuffing defensive end Kenyon Coleman (pectoral) are both out for the year. One year after allowing a mind-boggling 440.1 yards per game, look for the Saints to be involved in plenty of shootouts once again. David Hawthorne is Vilma's backup at the inside linebacker spot next to Curtis Lofton.

Its an fing knee scope and some of you are jumping off the bridge.

Here's what I understand: the part where Ryan has definitive responsibilities for every player, that can only help. But that doesn't change the fact that our personnel is largely unchanged. And the changes we did make have gotten hurt (half the big changes, Butler and Coleman, are done for the year).

What you have is basically the same personnel group making a change to a totally different scheme in the 3-4.

I so badly want to be optimistic, I really do. I just can't. Last year's defense left scars, man.

Look at it this way: players that were limited in snaps and yet produced when they were in (Hicks, Junior, Tez, Bunkley) are going to be starters. Then you got players that played well all year (Jordan, Lofton). Then you got some young up and coming talent (White, Bush, Martin, Foster, Walker, Vacarro), as well as some valuable veteran talent (Carr, Leonhard) that could contribute.

There's reason for optimism. Question is will the cream be allowed to rise to the top? Because if so, Smith has no business seeing the field. That's the thing that could hurt us.

No a scope isn't anything serious for most players but considering Vilma's history of knee problems this has to be concerning. If he's getting his knee drained to relieve fluid & swelling just from the rigors of training camp then what do we expect during the season when the bullets are flying for real? I love Vilma's fire & leadership as much as the next fan but it's getting to the point where Jon seriously needs to consider retirement. He isn't a spring chicken anymore & the knee issues just continually seem to worsen each passing season.

Jordan (returning)
Bunkley (returning)
Hicks (backup to Sed Ellis)
Galette (was a backup)
Wilson (backup)
Smith (position change)
K Lewis (new CB)
Greer (returning)
Jenkins (returning)
Harper (returning)
Vaccaro (rookie)
Lofton (returning)
Vilma (returning)

By my count, thats 5 of 13 guys that will see a significant change in playing time.

Not to mention the addition by subtraction of Shanle and Ellis.

Also, mix in young guys that will see time (Foster, Walker, J. Jenkins, Eric Martin....etc) and you have yourself a vastly different defensive makeup from last season's crap.

Yes, for me too. But damn, its hard for me to not be optimistic in the preseason.

Good news is dink-and-dunk 80 yard drives take forever. If the offense is hummimg along, opposing teams are going to be hard pressed to keep up if they limit themselves to 5 yard passes over the middle all day.

At this point in time, I'd rather see the organization pay him to leave then to keep him around. Or he could take the honorable route & just retire but I don't see that happening.

That whole drive was off zone coverage, nothing like we're going to be running during the year. We didn't blitz at all during that drive. We held up well against the run, and we didn't allow big plays.

Getting a little more optimistic...but I need to see less Will Smiff and more of what Patrick said about cream rising to the top.

There was a report that Hawthorne was having a good camp. Should ease the pain of losing Vilma for a couple of weeks.

CSP was on 1061 this morning and commented that Hawthorne looked good

Yeah I get that, but I'm making a larger point, if our LB corps does turn out to be the weak link, and that's where opposing offenses are forced to attack... well those drives take a long time and can be difficult to sustain.

The 1992 NFC Pro Bowl Bowl defense doesn't have the personnel to run what Spags wants to do.

He was about as worthless as an African Ryno Butt Pump. I don't even know what that is, but it's pretty damn worthless.

The starting olb that were on the field (Smith and Richardson), definitely not. Richardson was playing DE before injuries to Butler, Galette and Tez happen. Still better than Smith. We'd get eaten up in the flats.

all of this. I was on the Alec Ogletree bandwagon before the draft. We need to add more speed at LB. I think that has become pretty clear over the last few years.

but we needed help at every position on defense so I guess it really didn't matter who we picked.
